086) with a marginal significance, indicating that complete surgical resection of the tumor and perioperative adjuvant therapy could be effective treatment for MPM in Japan. Thus, the development of multimodality therapy including surgical treatment for this disease may be required to improve surgical results of MPM patients.
Conclusions: The multimodality treatment we adopted for stage II-III MPM was feasible, well tolerated by most of the patients and produced a favourable outcome. New targeted therapies are awaited for further improvements in the treatment of this disease.
November 1st, 2006. Malignant pleural mesothelioma: a comprehensive review
Conclusions: The disease is expected to increase in incidence till 2020, so awareness of this entity as a possible diagnosis should be heightened. In patients with advanced disease, several newer antitumor agents are already showing a capability of extending survival so it is not unreasonable to expect further progress in this area.
May 23rd, 2006. Management of malignant mesothelioma by decortication and adjunct phototherapy
The survival curve was compared to that of 17 matched patients treated by decortication alone. Median survival increased from 250 to 440 days in the combined treatment group.
May 5th, 2006. “Therapeutic” pleural surgery
Median survival for operated mesothelioma is 19 months with a 46% five-year survival for the tumors with the best prognosis. At the present time, radical surgical resection is the basis of local treatment for pleural mesothelioma.
April 1st, 2006. Phase I to II Study of Pleurectomy/Decortication and Intraoperative Intracavitary Hyperthermic Cisplatin Lavage for Mesothelioma
Conclusion: Pleurectomy and high-dose intraoperative intracavitary hyperthermic cisplatin lavage is feasible in this patient population withrestricted surgical options. An apparent dose-related survival benefit warrants further study.
July 28th, 2005. Hemithoracic radiation therapy after pleurectomy/decortication for malignant pleural mesothelioma
Conclusions: Pleurectomy/decortication with adjuvant radiotherapy is not an effective treatment option for patients with MPM. Our results imply that residual disease cannot be eradicated with external RT with or without brachytherapy and that a more extensive surgery followed by external RT might be required to improve local control and overall survival.
November 1st, 2004. Patterns of failure following surgical resection for malignant pleural mesothelioma
Further clinical studies are needed for all patients with mesothelioma to define the optimum surgery and duration and types of adjuvant therapy. The appropriate multimodality approaches most likely will differ based on disease stage, histology, and patient performance status.
