May 21st, 2008. The defence of chrysotile, 1912-2007
Rather, the inquiries constituted elements in the industry's successful public relations exercise that continues to operate to this day. Even when an increasing number of national bodies have legislated for total bans on asbestos use, a policy with which all the international bodies concerned with public health agree, the Canadian PR apparatus continues to be able to call on physicians and scientists prepared to oppose the consensuses reached by the independent advisors to these bodies.
May 2nd, 2008. What has the meta-analysis contributed to today’s standard of care in the treatment of thoracic malignancies?
Their results have been used as an effective tool for resolving various clinical questions, providing more reliable evidence for some clinical practice: (neo)adjuvant chemotherapy after surgery for resectable NSCLC, radiochemotherapy for patients with unresectable limited NSCLC and limited SCLC, advantage of chemotherapy for advanced NSCLC and identification of the most active drugs. However, it is important to understand the limits of their methodology in order to avoid inappropriate interpretations.
April 30th, 2008. VATS in Diagnostic and Treatment of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma on the Occasion of Advanced Pleural Mesothelioma
Conclusion: 1.Surgical treatment is decisive for diagnosis and treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma even in advanced cases and have evident positive effects. 2. Surgical methods improve patient's condition, even in inoperable cases. 3. VATS surgery is modern method for diagnosis and treatment and if it necessary we can continue by conventional operation for definitive treatment of mesothelioma.

April 17th, 2008. The lived experience of patients with pleural mesothelioma
A feeling of social isolation was also reported and a number of patients would welcome the opportunity to meet with other people in the same situation as themselves. In conclusion, there is a lack of attention to the emotional needs of this group of patients, which means that supportive care resources are not being accessed in a timely and flexible manner.
April 16th, 2008. Mortality from pleural and peritoneal cancer in a cohort of asbestos workers, many years after start of the exposure: possible role of fibers clearance]
The risk for pleural cancer, rather than showing an indefinite increase, might reach a plateau when a sufficiently long time has elapsed since exposure. The different trends for pleural and peritoneal cancer might be related to clearance of the asbestos from the workers' lungs.
April 16th, 2008. Exposition to asbestos dust in agricultural environment. Some significant exposure forms documented by the Hospital Unit of Occupational Medicine of Hospital Institute of Cremona
At the moment there aren't full-blown asbestos-linked pathology but these workers are potentially at risk of getting them. So it has an importance both on individual and global level for the rural area near Cremona.

April 10th, 2008. The development and deployment of Common Data Elements for tissue banks for translational research in cancer – an emerging standard based approach for the Mesothelioma Virtual Tissue Bank
Conclusion: The CAP, ADASP and the NAACCR elements represent widely established data elements that are utilized in many cancer centers. Herein, we have shown these representations can be combined and formalized to create a core set of annotations for banked mesothelioma specimens. Because these data elements are collected as part of the normal workflow of a medical center, data sets developed on the basis of these elements can be easily implemented and maintained.
March 21st, 2008. Pericardial tumors
Primary tumors of the pericardium are extremely rare and occur in a broad age range. This review describes several of the more common lesions: germ cell tumors, solitary fibroma, pericardial mesothelioma, and metastatic disease.
March 20th, 2008. From the archives of the AFIP: primary peritoneal tumors: imaging features with pathologic correlation
This unusual group of tumors is linked together by a common site of origin and imaging manifestations that mimic those of peritoneal carcinomatosis. Knowledge of the spectrum of imaging findings in this group of primary peritoneal tumors, along with their clinical and pathologic characteristics, is important in the evaluation of patients with diffuse peritoneal disease.
March 15th, 2008. Medico-legal aspects of mesothelioma.
In criminal law, the current approach of the Supreme Court is to demand evidence of strong causality, with a high logical probability and rational credibility, and beyond reasonable doubt, because criminal liability is personal as established in article 27 of the Italian Constitution. It is worth pointing out that all the levels of evidence indicated above must pass the test of scientific suitability or possibility.
March 14th, 2008. Malignant Mesothelioma Resistance to Apoptosis: Recent Discoveries and their Implication for Effective Therapeutic Strategies
The understanding of the molecular mechanisms responsible of the malignant mesothelioma resistance to apoptosis is now advancing, allowing developing new therapeutic strategies to change the natural history and improve survival of patients. This review gives an overview of the main anti-apoptotic strategies devised by malignant mesothelioma and the therapeutic implication and opportunities for this cancer.
March 11th, 2008. Expression of cell adhesion molecule 1 in malignant pleural mesothelioma as a cause of efficient adhesion and growth on mesothelium
These phenotypic differences were not detectable in cocultures on lung fibroblastic monolayers, in which all MPM cells grew much more slowly than on mesothelial cells, irrespective of CADM1 positivity. CADM1 thus appears to mediate efficient adhesion and growth of MPM cells specifically on mesothelial cells, probably via trans-heterophilic binding, and thus may be involved in the manifestation of a considerable subset of MPMs as diffusely growing tumors disseminated over the pleural surface.
March 11th, 2008. A Conditional Mouse Model for Malignant Mesothelioma
Conditional Nf2;Ink4a/Arf mice showed increased pleural invasion compared to conditional Nf2;p53 mice. Interestingly, upon Ink4a loss in the latter mice median survival was significantly reduced and all tumors were highly invasive, suggesting that Ink4a loss substantially contributes to the poor clinical outcome of malignant mesothelioma.
March 8th, 2008. Advances in the molecular biology of malignant mesothelioma
Although the causative role of asbestos is well-known in MM, much less information is available for MM than for other malignant tumors regarding the molecular alterations that occur in the disease. In terms of future tasks, it will be necessary to apply the knowledge that is learned about molecular alterations to clinical practice and to further elucidate the pathogenesis of MM with extensive research.
February 28th, 2008. Induction of mesothelioma in p53+/- mouse by intraperitoneal application of multi-wall carbon nanotube
Our results point out the possibility that carbon-made fibrous or rod-shaped micrometer particles may share the carcinogenic mechanisms postulated for asbestos. To maintain sound activity of industrialization of nanomaterials, it would be prudent to implement strategies to keep good control of exposure to fibrous or rod-shaped carbon materials both in the workplace and in the future market until the biological/ carcinogenic properties, especially of their long-term biodurability, are fully assessed.
February 26th, 2008. Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma tumours. Evolution, treatment, prognosis
The diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma is often delayed, in part because of the usually long latent period (peaking at 40-45 years from the time of initial exposure to asbestos) and because the common presenting symptoms of weight loss, usually with a full abdomen, malaise, and abdominal discomfort, are mild and nonspecific. This paper aim is to present a case report regarding a patient diagnosed with malignant peritoneal mesothelioma with an unpredictable evolution.
February 22nd, 2008. Epidemiology, molecular biology, diagnostic and therapeutic strategy of malignant pleural mesothelioma in 2007 – an update
Antiangiogenic agents such as bevacizumab (Avastatin) may be of interest but need to be tested in phase 3 trials. The Mesothelioma Avastatin Pemetrexed Study (MAPS) is ongoing, coordinated by the French Thoracic Cancer Intergroup (IFCT).
