Surgery to remove a sample of the tissue that lines the lungs and the inside of the chest wall which is then examined to check for disease or infection.
August 14th, 2008. Soft tissue sarcoma metastatic to pleura
It is very difficult to distinguish them form sarcomatous malignant mesothelioma on histopathological features. We report a 57 year-old man who presented to us with left chest pain and progressive dyspnea and was diagnosed to have a pleural metastases of soft tissue sarcoma by thoracoscopic biopsy.
August 14th, 2008. Full-thickness pleural biopsy using an Insulation-tipped Diathermic knife in a patient with malignant pleural mesothelioma
Pathology revealed extensive fibrosis and epithelial mesothelioma by the specimen. This biopsy technique using IT knife through semiflexible thoracoscopy enabled to obtain a full-thickness pleura It is thought to be useful for the diagnosis of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) in which standard forceps are difficult to grasp.
July 24th, 2008. The comparative accuracy of different pleural biopsy techniques in the diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma
Conclusions: Overall, all procedures had utility but definitive diagnostic accuracy for 'blind' closed pleural biopsy was low (16%), dependent on biopsy specimen size and tumour subtype. Sarcomatoid subtype malignant mesothelioma yielded the lowest diagnostic accuracy. For all subtypes of malignant mesothelioma, open pleural biopsy produced the highest diagnostic accuracy (100% sensitivity, 95% specificity).
July 1st, 2008. Solitary fibrous pleural tumor
Further testing after excision revealed a solitary fibrous pleural tumor. A brief discussion of the clinical presentation and incidence of these tumors is included.
June 5th, 2008. Response of a Patient with Pleural and Peritoneal Mesothelioma after Second-Line Chemotherapy with Lipoplatin and Gemcitabine
Treatment with lipoplatin-gemcitabine was decided on in November 2006, and the patient showed important improvement in the clinical status and peritoneal effusion. He survived for 36 weeks, with symptom-free survival of 34 weeks.

June 4th, 2008. An autopsy case of diffuse pleural thickening presented respiratory impairment and benign asbestos pleurisy
The autopsy disclosed asbestos-related lung diseases. We suspected that diffuse pleural thickening could be a major cause of fatal respiratory impairment in this case.

June 4th, 2008. Image-guided pleural biopsy
Image-guided and thoracoscopic biopsies have similarly high diagnostic rates, and are complementary techniques used in different clinical situations. Further studies assessing biopsy tract site invasion from mesothelioma with different biopsy techniques are required.
May 3rd, 2008. Video-assisted cervical thoracoscopy: a novel approach for diagnosis, staging and pleurodesis of malignant pleural mesothelioma
Conclusions: The benefits of this approach include reduction in postoperative pain, risk of biopsy site tumour seeding, and preoperative delay to radical surgery. VACT is feasible in right-sided mesothelioma but has not yet been validated on the left.
February 19th, 2008. Malignant pleural mesothelioma: multidisciplinary experience in a public tertiary hospital
Conclusions: In the cases studied, an integrated multidisciplinary approach was used, and a highly complex hospital infrastructure was available for the diagnosis and treatment of MPM, as recommended in the literature. However, the mean survival was only 11 months, reflecting the aggressiveness of the disease.

October 24th, 2007. Localized malignant pleural mesothelioma treated by a curative intent lobectomy: a case report
His postoperative course was uneventful, and he has been doing well for almost 1 year. A resection of the tumor has shown to increase survival in previous reports, though the role of oncologically justifiable resection, such as a lobectomy, and the biological behavior of such tumors are still difficult to predict.

September 22nd, 2007. Accuracy of pleural biopsy using thoracoscopy for the diagnosis of histologic subtype in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma
Conclusions: Pleural biopsy performed using thoracoscopy is considered to be the cornerstone of the diagnosis and pleural staging of MPM. However, this procedure appears to be less efficient in diagnosing the histologic subtype as either epithelial or biphasic.
July 31st, 2007. Case of asbestosis with massive benign pleural involvement
Pleural asbestosis. The authors stress importance of contemporary diagnostic techniques in occupational pathology.
July 24th, 2007. Pseudomesotheliomatous carcinoma of the lung
Immunohistochemically, the tumor was positive for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), but negative for calretinin, thrombomodulin, and pulmonary surfactant apoprotein. Final diagnosis was adenocarcinoma of the lung.
April 25th, 2007. Malignant mesothelioma with intracytoplasmic crystalline inclusions
In the authors' experience this is a rare finding. The clinical information initially received was poor and electron microscopy was essential in making the correct diagnosis.
April 7th, 2007. Diagnostic procedures of pleural malignant mesothelioma: our experience
Conclusion: The accurate diagnosis of MM is mandatory for appropriate treatment decision (surgical or nonsurgical). Our results demonstrate that HMBE-1 is a most useful diagnostic antibody for epithelioid MM, and TTF-1 for lung adenocarcinoma (its thyroid origin excluded) involving pleura.
January 26th, 2007. Malignant pleural mesothelioma
4% and the median survival time in patients with epithelial mesothelioma was 30. 6 months.

November 8th, 2006. Malignant pleural mesothelioma in a 14-year-old boy with right aortic arch
As the disease was not changed after combination chemotherapy with three cycles of cisplatin and gemcitabine, we performed left extrapleural pneumonectomy, including resection of the pericardium and diaphragm for MPM, and aortopexy for right aortic arch. The postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient has remained alive without disease for 10 months postoperatively.

November 3rd, 2006. Mesothelioma with non-pleural malignancy: a red herring or just an uncommon pairing?
We report four cases of female patients with MPM referred for palliation of symptoms thought to be due to previous non-pleural malignancy. With emerging novel treatments for MPM, this article discusses four unusual cases of MPM occurring in the setting of other malignancy, highlights the importance of considering a primary diagnosis of MPM even in patients with other malignancy, and reinforces the benefits of video-assisted surgical biopsy which allows simultaneous diagnosis and treatment.
November 1st, 2006. Video-assisted diagnostic thoracoscopy
Video-assisted thoracoscopy is a safe and effective guiding tool if performed by experienced thoracic surgeons able to convert to thoracotomy. It is to be noted that interpretation of intraoperative findings plays a decisive role in interdisciplinary diagnostics of intrathoracal diseases.
September 29th, 2006. Pleural Mesothelioma: Sensitivity and Incidence of Needle Track Seeding after Image-guided Biopsy versus Surgical Biopsy
Conclusion: Image-guided core-needle biopsy in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma has a lower incidence of needle track seeding than surgical biopsy and has a high sensitivity for diagnosis.
