May 23rd, 2008. Primary peritoneal mesotheliomas in children: a clinicopathological and immunohistochemical study of eight cases

Conclusions: Peritoneal malignant mesothelioma in children is a rare condition that can introduce difficulties in histopathological diagnosis.

May 21st, 2008. Malignant mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis related to recent asbestos

There have been 46 cases reported in urology departments in this country of the related symptoms, but only two of these have been clearly attributable to asbestos, which may be due to the investigations being insufficient to obtain a definitive diagnosis. In addition, this symptom is often diagnosed preoperatively as hydrocele testis; it is therefore important to carry out ultrasonography when a hydrocele testis has been diagnosed.

May 7th, 2008. A Technical Comparison of Evaluating Asbestos Concentration by Phase-Contrast Microscopy (PCM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Analytical Transmission Electron Microscopy (ATEM) as Illustrated From Data Generated From a Case Report

These results further indicate that if causation of an asbestos-induced disease such as mesothelioma is based on asbestos concentration of lung tissue, erroneous conclusions can be made by analyzing tissue only by SEM. Thus, the methodologies that are available to analyze asbestos in lung tissue are extensively discussed here with respect to the type of procedure that should be utilized in various situations.

May 3rd, 2008. Dysphagia as an unusual complication of pleural mesothelioma

Abstract Dysphagia is an unusual presentation of pleural mesothelioma and carries a grim prognosis. A case of an elderly patient is presented herein, in whom the diagnosis was confirmed histologically, and the patient was still surviving 6 months after palliation.

April 30th, 2008. Malignant mesothelioma with unexpected contralateral mediastinal shift: a case report

Conclusions: This case illustrates mediastinal shift away from the affected side which was caused by mesothelioma tissue itself, rather than by a pleural effusion which is the more usual cause of contralateral mediastinal shift in mesothelioma.

April 30th, 2008. Pleural mesothelioma and venous thrombosis: the eosinophilia link

We describe a patient with mesothelioma who developed peripheral blood eosinophilia followed by deep vein thrombosis despite being on low molecular weight heparin prophylaxis. We discuss the genesis of peripheral blood eosinophilia and thrombosis in pleural mesothelioma.

April 29th, 2008. Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma as a rare cause of ascites: a case report

Conclusion: We concluded from this case that Peritoneal Mesothelioma although rare but should be considered among the differential diagnosis of Ascites.

April 24th, 2008. Serous borderline tumor of the paratestis

Ultrastructurally, the cells did not demonstrate any well-developed microvilli or secretory granules and immunohistochemical findings supported SBT of Müllerian type (ovarian epithelial type tumor), while excluding a papillary type of malignant mesothelioma. The lesion in the present case was concluded to be a testicular serous tumor of Müllerian type, similar to SBT of the ovary.

April 16th, 2008. Pleural mesothelioma in barman with probable occupational exposure to asbestos

In some gaskets which are part of these coffee machines, we verified the presence of chrysotile fibers. Italian National Mesothelioma Register have reported a MM case with a professional origin arised in a barman with a certain diagnosis in 1999 (Tuscany Region).

April 15th, 2008. A case of omental mesothelioma presenting with laminar thickening of omentum-appearances of diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma

In addition, Gascintigraphy and FDG-PET are useful auxiliary diagnostic tools. In the future, we hope to differentiate epithelial, sarcomatous and biphasic types based on imaging findings.

March 22nd, 2008. Well-Differentiated Papillary Mesothelioma of the Tunica Vaginalis Testis: Imaging on Tc-99m Heat-Denatured Red Blood Cell Scintigraphy

The patient underwent resection and histopathology revealed a well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma. Inguinal orchidectomy was subsequently performed and the patient was free of recurrence at 18 months.

March 19th, 2008. F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT scanning in the diagnostic work-up of a primary pericardial mesothelioma: a case report

The use of F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography whole body scan has been recently advocated to improve staging and to monitor treatment in pleural mesothelioma. This is the first case describing the use of F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography in the diagnostic work-up of a primary pericardial mesothelioma.

March 8th, 2008. Localized malignant mesenteric mesothelioma causing small bowel obstruction

To the best of the authors' knowledge this is the first reported case of localized malignant mesothelioma arising inside the mesentery. Mesothelioma should be considered as the differential diagnosis when small bowel obstruction occurs with unknown primary neoplasm.

February 27th, 2008. I-131 accumulation in a benign cystic mesothelioma in a patient with follicular thyroid cancer

Extrathyroidal I-131 accumulation has been reported in various sites, such as ectopic gastric mucosa, gastrointestinal and urinary tract abnormalities, cysts (mammary, liver, kidney, and ovaries), and inflammation and infection foci. We report a case of focal I-131 accumulation in a benign cystic mesothelioma in a patient with follicular thyroid cancer.

February 26th, 2008. Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma tumours. Evolution, treatment, prognosis

The diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma is often delayed, in part because of the usually long latent period (peaking at 40-45 years from the time of initial exposure to asbestos) and because the common presenting symptoms of weight loss, usually with a full abdomen, malaise, and abdominal discomfort, are mild and nonspecific. This paper aim is to present a case report regarding a patient diagnosed with malignant peritoneal mesothelioma with an unpredictable evolution.

February 19th, 2008. Pericardial malignant mesothelioma: a latent complication of radiotherapy?

Radiotherapy and asbestos exposure are both associated with pericardial mesothelioma and the aetiology in this case was not clear. The condition carries a poor prognosis and is invariable fatal although newer chemotherapeutic regimens have prolonged survival times.

February 19th, 2008. Mesothelin-related predictive and prognostic factors in malignant mesothelioma: A nested case–control study

High age (>65 years) was an independent negative prognostic factor that was related to both mesothelin expression and asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma of the epithelial type of the peritoneum had a significantly longer survival than epithelial type in pleura and was also related to mesothelin expression.

January 31st, 2008. Pulmonary mesothelioma in bronchioalveolar lavage: A case report

A thorough review of the English language literature found no reports where a diagnosis of mesothelioma was made on material originating from bronchioalveolar lavage (BAL). We report a case of lung parenchymal involvement by mesothelioma shedding cells in BAL specimen.

January 29th, 2008. Oesphageal Stenting for palliation of malignamt mesothelioma

It can be distressing for the patient and challenging for the physician to treat. We describe three cases in which this condition has been successfully palliated with self expanding esophageal stents.

January 22nd, 2008. Recurrent hydropneumothorax as a presenting feature of malignant mesothelioma

A video-assisted thoracoscopic procedure was performed and revealed an abnormally thickened pleura that turned out to be a mesothelioma. All persistent pneumothoraces should be investigated.
