December 25th, 2008. Proteome analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage in individuals from Metsovo, nonoccupationally exposed to asbestos
Proteomic analysis (2D-electrophoresis/Mass Spectrometry) of BAL in Metsovites nonoccupationally exposed to asbestos revealed increased albumin fragments, alpha1-antitrypsin, S100-A9 and HSP27, suggesting ongoing inflammation. In those without pleural calcifications, increased expression of acid ceramidase, glutathione-S-transferase and presence of calcyphosin, all involved in cell cycle regulation and death as well as in the detoxification of mutagenic and toxic agents, lend further support to our thesis of possible "protection against neoplasia" in Metsovites with pleural calcifications.
December 25th, 2008. Peritoneal mesothelioma: treatment with cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy
Conclusion: Cytoreductive surgery combined with HIPEC may improve the length of survival for patients with diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma; such patients should be treated in specialized centers.

December 25th, 2008. Malignant pleural effusion as the presenting site of cancer: comparison with metastatic pleural effusions from known cancers
Conclusion: Pleural effusions as the presenting site of cancer account for 41% of all malignant pleural effusions. Their causes are mainly lung cancer in men and lung and ovarian cancers in women.
December 23rd, 2008. Advantages of multidetector-row CT with multiplanar reformation in guiding percutaneous lung biopsies
Conclusions: MDCT MPR images allowed sampling of pulmonary lesions until now considered unreachable with axial MDCT guidance because of overlying bony structures (ribs, sternum and scapulae) or critical location (hilar-mediastinal, proximity to the heart or large vessels). Compared with the conventional procedure, the use of MPR images does not increase the rate of pneumothorax or the procedure time.

More recently, D2-40 immunoexpression has been reported in primary adrenal cortical tumors, schwannomas, and adnexal tumors of the skin. This brief review provides an update on the ever-expanding proposed applications of D2-40 immunohistochemistry in surgical pathology.

Conclusions: There is marked variation in the quality, integrity, and currency of the information in educational websites for mesothelioma patients. Google ranking has shown a weak but significant positive correlation to the quality of medical information relating to mesothelioma.

Conclusions: SV40 sequences are present in blood samples of healthy donors from Casale Monferrato with a prevalence similar to that reported in previous investigations of healthy donors from asbestos-free areas. Altogether these data suggest that SV40 is circulating in the human population.

December 17th, 2008. A binding domain on mesothelin for CA125/MUC16
In addition, we have shown that a single chain monoclonal antibody (SS1) recognizes this CA125-binding domain and blocks the mesothelin-CA125 interaction on cancer cells. The identified CA125-binding domain significantly inhibits cancer cell adhesion and merits evaluation as a new therapeutic agent for preventing or treating peritoneal malignant tumors.
