May 31st, 2008. mTOR Mediates Survival Signals in Malignant Mesothelioma Grown as Tumor Fragment Spheroids
We propose that mTOR mediates survival signals in many mesothelioma tumors. Inhibition of mTOR may provide a non-toxic adjunct to therapy directed against malignant mesothelioma, especially in those with high baseline expression of p-S6K.
May 30th, 2008. Two cases of asbestosis and one case of rounded atelectasis due to non-occupational asbestos exposure
The three cases indicate that non-neoplastic, long-latency asbestos-related diseases which are usually observed as a consequence of occupational exposures, may rarely develop in subjects living in contaminated geographical sites and buildings. These unusual environmental diseases raise the diagnostic problem of differentiating them from other, more common respiratory illnesses, and impose the duties of patient notification, assessment and follow-up, to assess the possibility of progression of disease and increased neoplastic risk.
May 29th, 2008. Malignant mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis in a petrochemical worker exposed to asbestos
Tunical mesothelioma may simulate metastatic carcinoma at routine histopathological examination. Immunohistochemistry and occupational anamnesis are helpful for the correct diagnosis, which, in turn, is important for prognosis and treatment, and in relation to legal issues when asbestos is involved in the causation of the disease.

May 29th, 2008. Erionite-induced pleural plaques : Exposition to urban pollution in a female Turkish migrant in Germany
Short-term clinical and radiologic control of the patient will be necessary because of the risk of MPM. For epidemiologic considerations discussed referring to current literature, a growing incidence of this type of disease in migrants from high-risk areas must be reckoned with in Germany, even without exposition to asbestos.
May 28th, 2008. Phase I trial of pegylated liposomal doxorubicin with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy in patients undergoing cytoreduction for advanced intra-abdominal malignancy
Conclusions: We report that HIPEC with PLD following maximal cytoreduction in patients with advanced abdominal-only gastrointestinal or gynecologic malignancies is well tolerated. Encouraging survival after cytoreduction and HIPEC with PLD suggest that a phase II trial to verify activity is indicated.
May 27th, 2008. Restrictive eligibility limits access to newer therapies in non-small-cell lung cancer: the implications of Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group 4599
Conclusion: Based on the data reviewed, > 70% of patients who might otherwise have been eligible for standard advanced NSCLC trials were not candidates for ECOG 4599. Outcome with respect to this study must be interpreted in the context of eligibility restrictions.
May 24th, 2008. Effects of Piroxicam and Cisplatin on mesothelioma cells growth and viability
In particular, the two drugs in NCI cell line had a synergistic effect on apoptosis, probably through activation of caspase 8 and caspase 9, while the most evident targets among the cell cycle regulators were cyclin D1 and p21waf1. These results suggest that the association of piroxicam and CDDP specifically triggers cell cycle regulation and apoptosis in different mesothelioma cell lines and may hold promise in the treatment of mesothelioma.
May 23rd, 2008. Circulating Adiponectin Levels and Expression of Adiponectin Receptors in Relation to Lung Cancer: Two Case-Control Studies
Conclusions: Circulating adiponectin levels are not different in cases of this malignancy - which seems to be unrelated to obesity and insulin resistance - compared to their healthy controls, though hormonal levels were significantly lower in advanced versus limited lung cancer. Both adiponectin receptors were expressed in cancerous lung tissue, but not in normal control tissue and there was a differential expression by disease stage. These findings should be further explored, especially in the context of the recently reported protective effect of thiazolidinediones in diabetic patients with lung cancer.
May 23rd, 2008. Primary peritoneal mesotheliomas in children: a clinicopathological and immunohistochemical study of eight cases
Conclusions: Peritoneal malignant mesothelioma in children is a rare condition that can introduce difficulties in histopathological diagnosis.

May 23rd, 2008. Multiple roles of nicotine on cell proliferation and inhibition of apoptosis: Implications on lung carcinogenesis
These observations led to the hypothesis that nicotine might be playing a direct role in the promotion and progression of human lung cancers. Here, we briefly overview the role and the effects of nicotine on pulmonary cell growth and physiology and its feasible implications in lung carcinogenesis.
May 22nd, 2008. Railways and Asbestos in Japan (1928-1987) -Epidemiology of Pleural Plaques, Malignancies and Pneumoconioses
Two cases of mesothelioma were reported in 1980. Pneumoconioses: Most studies (1928-1975) had relatively low prevalence rates among SL-related workers.
May 22nd, 2008. Trends in suspected and recognized occupational respiratory diseases in Germany between 1970 and 2005.
Conclusions: Although trends in occupational disease may be influenced by several factors, the presented data indicate that prevention has been effective in reducing some of the most frequent occupational respiratory diseases in Germany.
May 21st, 2008. The defence of chrysotile, 1912-2007
Rather, the inquiries constituted elements in the industry's successful public relations exercise that continues to operate to this day. Even when an increasing number of national bodies have legislated for total bans on asbestos use, a policy with which all the international bodies concerned with public health agree, the Canadian PR apparatus continues to be able to call on physicians and scientists prepared to oppose the consensuses reached by the independent advisors to these bodies.
May 21st, 2008. Malignant mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis related to recent asbestos
There have been 46 cases reported in urology departments in this country of the related symptoms, but only two of these have been clearly attributable to asbestos, which may be due to the investigations being insufficient to obtain a definitive diagnosis. In addition, this symptom is often diagnosed preoperatively as hydrocele testis; it is therefore important to carry out ultrasonography when a hydrocele testis has been diagnosed.
May 21st, 2008. Human Tumor-Derived Exosomes Down-Modulate NKG2D Expression
This hyporesponsiveness was evident even in the presence of IL-15, a strong inducer of NKG2D. Our data show that NKG2D is a likely physiological target for exosome-mediated immune evasion in cancer.
May 20th, 2008. The efficacy and safety of weekly vinorelbine in relapsed malignant pleural mesothelioma
Weekly vinorelbine appeared to have a reasonable response rate with an acceptable toxicity profile in the second-line treatment of MPM. Its use should be prospectively evaluated in a randomised trial in the first or second-line therapy of MPM.
May 20th, 2008. Active symptom control with or without chemotherapy in the treatment of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma (MS01): a multicentre randomised trial
Interpretation: The addition of chemotherapy to ASC offers no significant benefits in terms of overall survival or quality of life. However, exploratory analyses suggested that vinorelbine merits further investigation.

May 16th, 2008. Neoplastic and nonneoplastic conditions of serosal membrane origin: CT findings
Nonneoplastic conditions manifest as focal or diffuse thickening of the serosal membrane, a variable amount of fluid in the serosal cavity, and a soft-tissue mass at CT. Although the CT findings of some of the conditions overlap, knowledge of the typical findings is helpful in narrowing the differential diagnosis.
May 15th, 2008. Ranpirnase (Onconase), a cytotoxic amphibian ribonuclease, manipulates tumour physiological parameters as a selective killer and a potential enhancer for chemotherapy and radiation in cancer therapy
Conclusion: In animal studies, improvements in tumour physiology (i.e., increased blood flow, inhibited oxygen consumption, increased oxygenation and decreased tumour hypertension) and selectively enhanced radiation responses (i.e., increased radiation sensitivity and inhibited repair of sublethal and potentially lethal damage) were observed after ranpirnase treatment in preclinical tumour models. Ranpirnase is a promising candidate as an enhancer for radiation- and chemotherapy. Ongoing clinical trials promise to further improve the treatment of mesothelioma and lung cancer.
May 15th, 2008. Cytology of benign multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma in peritoneal washings
Conclusion: The combination of cytology of the peritoneal washing, histology (cell block and surgical specimen) and clinical history allow differentiation of BMPM from other cystic lesions (cystic lymphangioma and malignant mesothelioma).
