Journal Articles on Mesothelioma: April, 2008

April 30th, 2008. Malignant mesothelioma with unexpected contralateral mediastinal shift: a case report

Conclusions: This case illustrates mediastinal shift away from the affected side which was caused by mesothelioma tissue itself, rather than by a pleural effusion which is the more usual cause of contralateral mediastinal shift in mesothelioma.

April 30th, 2008. Pleural mesothelioma and venous thrombosis: the eosinophilia link

We describe a patient with mesothelioma who developed peripheral blood eosinophilia followed by deep vein thrombosis despite being on low molecular weight heparin prophylaxis. We discuss the genesis of peripheral blood eosinophilia and thrombosis in pleural mesothelioma.

April 30th, 2008. The value of occult disease in resection margin and lymph node after extrapleural pneumonectomy for malignant mesothelioma

Conclusions: In malignant pleural mesothelioma, the presence of occult disease in resection margins and lymph nodes can be identified by immunohistochemistry and significantly influences the prognosis. Cervical mediastinoscopy is useful in all patients considered for radical resection, but all specimens should be processed with immunohistochemical staining.

April 30th, 2008. Remarkable enhancement of cytotoxicity of onconase and cepharanthine when used in combination on various tumor cell lines

The mechanism of the observed synergism is unclear but it may be associated with the Onc activity in targeting microRNAs and/or NFkappaB and Cep activity also targeting NFkappaB. The data suggest that the combination of these two drugs, that individually express a low toxic profile, may have strong antitumor potential.

April 30th, 2008. VATS in Diagnostic and Treatment of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma on the Occasion of Advanced Pleural Mesothelioma

Conclusion: 1.Surgical treatment is decisive for diagnosis and treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma even in advanced cases and have evident positive effects. 2. Surgical methods improve patient's condition, even in inoperable cases. 3. VATS surgery is modern method for diagnosis and treatment and if it necessary we can continue by conventional operation for definitive treatment of mesothelioma.

April 29th, 2008. Prediction of mesothelioma and lung cancer in a cohort of asbestos exposed workers

Conclusion: This study provides predictions of asbestos-related mortality even in a selected cohort of exposed subjects, using previous knowledge about exposure-response relationship. The inclusion of individual information in the projection model helps reduce misclassification and improves the results. The method could be extended in other selected cohorts.

April 29th, 2008. Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma as a rare cause of ascites: a case report

Conclusion: We concluded from this case that Peritoneal Mesothelioma although rare but should be considered among the differential diagnosis of Ascites.

April 25th, 2008. Individual versus standard quality of life assessment in a phase II clinical trial in mesothelioma patients: Feasibility and responsiveness to clinical changes

Conclusion: The SEIQoL assessment seems to be feasible within a phase II clinical trial, but may require more effort from staff. More distinctive QoL changes in accordance with clinical changes were measured with the RSCL. Our findings suggest that the two measures are not interchangeable: the RSCL is to favor when mainly information related to the course of disease- and treatment is of interest.

April 25th, 2008. Efficacy and Safety of Pemetrexed in Combination with Cisplatin for Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma: A Phase I/II Study in Japanese Patients

Conclusion: The Pem/Cis combination provides promising activity and an acceptable safety profile for chemonaive Japanese MPM patients with the same recommend dosage and schedule used in rest of the world.

April 24th, 2008. Serous borderline tumor of the paratestis

Ultrastructurally, the cells did not demonstrate any well-developed microvilli or secretory granules and immunohistochemical findings supported SBT of Müllerian type (ovarian epithelial type tumor), while excluding a papillary type of malignant mesothelioma. The lesion in the present case was concluded to be a testicular serous tumor of Müllerian type, similar to SBT of the ovary.

April 24th, 2008. Does endoesophageal ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration replace mediastinoscopy in mediastinal staging of thoracic malignancies?

Conclusions: EUS-FNA sensitivity depends on the localisation of the primary tumour, and extent and location of mediastinal disease. For left-sided tumours, EUS-FNA improves mediastinal staging by assessing stations 5 and 6 inaccessible to conventional mediastinoscopy. For extended mediastinal disease, mediastinoscopy can be avoided or spared for restaging after neoadjuvant therapy. Exclusion of mediastinal involvement requires mediastinoscopy or open lymphadenectomy. Beyond mediastinal nodal staging, EUS-FNA may detect T4 and M1 situations. Thus, EUS-FNA is a useful supplement to and not the replacement of mediastinoscopy.

April 23rd, 2008. Cancer incidence among Finnish farmers, 1995-2005

Conclusions: The cancer incidence of Finnish farmers was significantly below the national average. The finding that lung cancer risk was low among dairy farmers but increased with a change to another type of farm production gives some support to the hypothesis that endotoxin exposure may decrease cancer risk.

April 22nd, 2008. Diagnostic value of carcinoembryonic antigen in malignant pleural effusion: A meta-analysis

Conclusions: Measurement of pleural CEA is likely to be a useful diagnostic tool for confirming MPE, and is also helpful in the differential diagnosis between malignant pleural mesothelioma and metastatic lung cancer. The results of CEA assays should be interpreted in parallel with clinical findings and the results of conventional tests.

April 22nd, 2008. Pharmacokinetic Analysis of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma—Initial Results of Tumor Microcirculation and its Correlation to Microvessel Density (CD-34)

Conclusions: DCE-MRI and IHC can be used in patients with MM to visualize tumor microvascularity and to characterize tumor heterogeneity. DCE-MRI and IHC results positively correlated, though moderately, but these two methods present as essential tumor biomarkers. This multimodal characterization may be useful in selecting possible tumor subtypes that would benefit from antiangiogenic therapy.

April 22nd, 2008. Increased exosome production from tumour cell cultures using the Integra CELLine Culture System

This simple culture system is a cost effective, useful method for significantly increasing the quantity of exosomes available from cultured cells, without detrimental effects. This tool should prove advantageous in future studies of exosome-immune modulation in cancer and other settings.

April 21st, 2008. Genetic susceptibility to malignant pleural mesothelioma and other asbestos-associated diseases

Major limitations in the study design, including the small size of study groups, affected the reliability of these studies. Technical improvements such as the use of high-throughput techniques will help to identify molecular pathways regulated by candidate genes.

April 18th, 2008. Measurement of trends in incidence of work-related skin and respiratory diseases, UK 1996-2005

Conclusions: Some estimated changes in incidence based on volunteer reporting may be biased by reporting fatigue; therefore apparent downward trends need to be interpreted cautiously. Differences in the population bases of the surveillance schemes and UK health service capacity constraints may also explain differences in trends found here.

April 17th, 2008. The lived experience of patients with pleural mesothelioma

A feeling of social isolation was also reported and a number of patients would welcome the opportunity to meet with other people in the same situation as themselves. In conclusion, there is a lack of attention to the emotional needs of this group of patients, which means that supportive care resources are not being accessed in a timely and flexible manner.

April 16th, 2008. Work related mesothelioma: analysis of cases discovered at the Section for Occupational Medicine and Toxicology of Siena University during the years 2000-2007

Thus it is possible to find other malignant and nonmalignant asbestos-related diseases more frequently than mesothelioma. There is an evident risk in rebuilding, so the development of new cases due to these exposures is expected.

April 16th, 2008. Malignant mesothelioma (MM) in women: findings of the Mesothelioma Register of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region

The study highlights the role played by extra-occupational exposure to asbestos among women and the need for careful investigation into previous asbestos exposure in all females with MM. In order to improve our knowledge of the part played by factors other than occupational exposure to asbestos in triggering the disease, it is crucial to reduce he number of cases with no information or "unknown" exposure to this dangerous substance.
