November 9th, 2007. Single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) affect cell physiology and cell architecture

In this study the effects of SWCNT raw material and purified SWCNT (SWCNT bundles) on cell behaviour of mesothelioma cells (MSTO-211H) and on epithelial cells (A549) had been investigated. The effect on cell behaviour (cell proliferation, cell activity, cytoskeleton organization, apoptosis and cell adhesion) were dependent on cell type, SWCNT quality (purified or not) and SWCNT concentration.

November 6th, 2007. Analysis of latency time and its determinants in asbestos related malignant mesothelioma cases of the Italian register

6 years increasing in recent years with a linear trend. Anatomical site, gender and morphology were not relevant for MM latency time whereas a shorter latency period was documented among occupationally exposed subjects (43 years) with respect to environmentally and household exposed ones (48 years).

November 3rd, 2007. Clinical value of using serological cytokeratins as therapeutic markers in thoracic malignancies

Several studies have been initiated in which surrogate markers are evaluated in comparison to chest X-rays and computer tomography. The present review focuses on the predictive and prognostic value of using serological cytokeratins as tumour markers for patients suffering from thoracic malignancies.

November 3rd, 2007. Flowcytometric immunophenotyping of peripheral-blood leukocytes in relation to immunopathology and cellular proliferation of pleural mesothelioma

In conclusion, mesothelioma might be associated with modulation of the tumoricidal effect of cytotoxic T lymphocytes in relation to tumor differentiation and its proliferative potentiality. Immunophenotyping analysis of leukocytes may reflect the competence of immune system against malignancy and act as an additive prognostic parameter for mesothelioma progression and probably expecting response to oncotherapy protocols.

November 3rd, 2007. Treatment of peritoneal carcinomatosis from ovarian cancer. Present, future directions and proposals

Higher survival rates can be reached in ovarian cancer, which is commonly diagnosed in the presence of peritoneal carcinomatosis, using an optimal cytoreductive radical surgery with intraperitoneal chemotherapy. An actualised review of the treatment of advanced ovarian cancer and a proposal of a national multicentre protocol for the treatment of peritoneal carcinomatosis from ovarian cancer has been performed by a group of Spanish surgeons and oncologists dedicated to a therapeutical approach to this pathology.

November 3rd, 2007. Novel expression of kallikreins, kallikrein-related peptidases and kinin receptors in human pleural mesothelioma

KRP/hK2, 6, 8 and 9 were also expressed in the cytoplasm and nuclei of mesothelioma cells, whereas KRP/hK5 and hK7 showed predominantly cytoplasmic localisation. This is a first report, but further studies are required to determine whether these proteins have a functional role in the pathogenesis of mesothelioma and/or may be potential biomarkers for pleural mesothelioma.

November 1st, 2007. Peritoneal mesothelioma presenting as an acute surgical abdomen due to jejunal perforation

Conclusions: Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare malignancy with grim prognosis. Small bowel involvement is a poor prognostic indicator. Our case of a small bowel perforation due to direct infiltration by peritoneal mesothelioma appears to be the first reported in the English literature.
