September 29th, 2007. Histopathological diagnosis of pneumoconiosis
One study, using appropriate methods of scientific investigation to evaluate the effects of such exposure on the health of asbestos mine workers in Brazil was conducted as part of a multicenter study and entitled "Morbidity and Mortality Among Workers Exposed to Asbestos in Mining Activities, 1940-1996". Drawing upon the experience acquired during the course of that study, the objective of the current report was to give an overview of asbestos-related diseases, with a special focus on the difficulties involved in establishing the histopathological diagnosis.

Conclusion: Restricted field IMRT provides an improved method to deliver IMRT to a complex target after extrapleural pneumonectomy. An upcoming Phase I trial will provide validation of these results.

Conclusion: It is expected that mesothelioma deaths will increase at least until 2016. Available data do not allow a prediction of the year mortality will start decreasing.
September 22nd, 2007. Expression of PAX2 in papillary serous carcinoma of the ovary: immunohistochemical evidence of fallopian tube or secondary Müllerian system origin?
Taken together, we suggest that PAX2 is a novel Müllerian-specific epithelial marker when used in proper clinical settings. Identification of PAX2 in the majority of papillary serous carcinomas of the ovary but not in the ovarian surface epithelium or epithelium-derived inclusion cysts suggests that this malignant epithelial tumor may be directly derived from the primary or secondary Müllerian epithelium in or surrounding the ovary, rather than from the surface epithelium or its derivatives.
September 22nd, 2007. Accuracy of pleural biopsy using thoracoscopy for the diagnosis of histologic subtype in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma
Conclusions: Pleural biopsy performed using thoracoscopy is considered to be the cornerstone of the diagnosis and pleural staging of MPM. However, this procedure appears to be less efficient in diagnosing the histologic subtype as either epithelial or biphasic.

Conclusion: Employment in this Coast Guard shipyard revealed a small but significant excess mortality from all causes, lung cancer and mesothelioma, most of which is probably related to asbestos exposure.

September 18th, 2007. HGF Mediates Cell Proliferation of Human Mesothelioma Cells Through a PI3K/MEK5/Fra-1 Pathway
HGF also caused increased MM cell viability and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) expression that were abolished by knockdown of MEK5 or Fra-1. Data suggest that HGF-induced effects in the some MM cells are mediated via activation of a novel PI3K/ERK5/Fra-1 feedback pathway that might explain tumor-specific effects of c-Met inhibitors on MM and other tumors.

Conclusions: The strong expression of cytoplasmic inactive STAT3 in NSCLC and MM cases implies a major role for STAT3 in tumor motility, invasion, and metastasis via a nontranscriptional pathway. We conclude that STAT3 and pSTAT3 are up-regulated in a high percentage of NSCLCs and MMs, regardless of tumor type, age, sex, smoking status, stage and grade of tumor, or survival, providing a basis for therapeutic intervention.

The role of FGF2 was confirmed by its down-regulation by treating MM cells with siRNA, abolishing EC proliferation and wound healing enhancement afforded by MM cells. We conclude that α-TOS disrupts angiogenesis mediated by MM cells by inhibiting FGF2 paracrine signalling.

Conclusions: These experiments provide a rationale for targeting Ras and associated signaling pathways in mesothelioma and also suggest cap-dependent translation as one mechanism by which Ras induces proliferation in this disease.
September 6th, 2007. Clinical Significance of Serum Mesothelin in Patients with Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer
Conclusions: Our data confirm that serum SMRP is a promising marker for the diagnosis, prognosis, and clinical monitoring of MM. We found that serum SMRP dosage may prove helpful in LC diagnosis as well. These data may also have positive repercussions on secondary preventive medical strategies for workers previously exposed to asbestos.

Conclusions: SS1P is well tolerated with pleuritis as the DLT at the highest dose level. Evidence of clinical activity was noted in a group of heavily pretreated patients. Phase II clinical trials of SS1P are being planned for malignant mesothelioma and other mesothelin-expressing malignancies.

Since medical thoracoscopy under local anesthesia is rapid, easy, safe, and well-tolerated procedure with an excellent diagnostic yield, it is recommended as a diagnostic procedure for cases with pleural diseases.

In addition, immunological analyses may lead to the development of new clinical tools for the modification of the pathophysiological aspects of diseases such as the regulation of autoimmunity or tumor immunity using cellmediated therapies, various cytokines, and molecule-targeting therapies. In particular, as the incidence of asbestos related malignancies is increasing and such malignancies have been a medical and social problem since the summer of 2005 in Japan, efforts should be focused on developing a cure for these diseases to eliminate nationwide anxiety.
