August 10th, 2007. D2-40-positive solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura: diagnostic pitfall of biopsy specimen
Focal immunoreactivity to D2-40 was positive in three out of seven cases, including the first case. Care is required in diagnosing biopsy specimens of D2-40-positive pleural spindle-cell tumors, especially in making the differential diagnosis between SFTP and malignant mesothelioma.
August 8th, 2007. Fatal legacy of asbestos
Abstract Mesothelioma is a fatal disease with no cure. Thousands have contracted it unwittingly through their job, environment or those they live with.
August 7th, 2007. Influence of Radiotherapy Technique and Dose on Patterns of Failure for Mesothelioma Patients After Extrapleural Pneumonectomy
Conclusions: High-dose hemithoracic RT appears to limit in-field LF compared with MDRT. However, DF remains a significant challenge, with one-half of our patients experiencing DF.
August 7th, 2007. The epidemiology and treatment of mesothelioma in South East England 1985-2002
Conclusions: Mesothelioma incidence has increased in South East England, particularly for men aged over 70 years. The highest incidence occurs along the Thames and its estuary reflecting areas of asbestos use in shipbuilding and industry in the past. More research is needed to understand the interrelationships of prognostic factors, treatment choices, and survival and to determine the best care and support for these patients and their families.
August 7th, 2007. Simian virus 40 and mesothelioma in Great Britain
Conclusion: Although the results for females show a reduction in the mesothelioma mortality rate coinciding with the introduction of the SV40-free Sabin polio vaccine, the absence of a similar result in males and of a priori biological evidence of a sex-specific SV40 effect, makes chance the most plausible interpretation of these findings.
August 4th, 2007. Commentary: A Case for Minimizing Folate Supplementation in Clinical Regimens with Pemetrexed Based on the Marked Sensitivity of the Drug to Folate Availability
S. , the addition of folic acid to regimens with pemetrexed should be limited to the lowest recommended level that provides optimal protection from pemetrexed toxicity.
August 4th, 2007. Multidisciplinary Treatment of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma
However, currently available treatments still appear to have modest results. Further studies are needed to provide evidence-based recommendations for the treatment of early and advanced stages of this disease.

August 3rd, 2007. Malignant pleural mesothelioma: outcome of limited surgical management
03). Survival after limited surgical management of malignant mesothelioma is comparable to a previously reported more radical surgical approach.
August 3rd, 2007. Polyhematoporphyrin-mediated photodynamic therapy and decortication in palliation of malignant pleural mesothelioma: a clinical pilot study
At 6-month follow up local tumor control and survival showed a significant difference in both groups. Although the study only includes a small number of patients not allowing definite conclusions, it indicates that the additional PDT/HBO represents a safe and technically feasible approach in the palliative setting of advanced malignant mesothelioma of the pleura.
August 3rd, 2007. Extended posterolateral-subcostal thoracotomy for extrapleural pneumonectomy: a surgical approach for radical operation of pleural mesothelioma
With extended posterolateral–subcostal thoracotomy, ideal surgical resection, with en bloc removal of the lung, parietal pleura, pericardium and diaphragm, can be performed radically, but safely, without a second thoracotomy. We conclude that extended posterolateral–subcostal thoracotomy is an effective approach for extrapleural pneumonectomy.
August 3rd, 2007. The MARS trial: mesothelioma and radical surgery
Can radical surgery cure mesothelioma or add usefully to the length and quality of life for its victims? The MARS (mesothelioma and radical surgery) trial is open and recruiting in Britain. If the trial proves feasible we will seek to make an international study.
August 3rd, 2007. A Phase I Clinical Trial of Single-Dose Intrapleural IFN-ß Gene Transfer for Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma and Metastatic Pleural Effusions: High Rate of Antitumor Immune Responses
Conclusions: Intrapleural instillation of Ad.IFN-ß is a potentially useful approach for the generation of antitumor immune responses in MPM and MPE patients and should be investigated further for overall clinical efficacy.

August 3rd, 2007. Peptide epitopes from the Wilms’ tumor 1 oncoprotein stimulate CD4+ and CD8+ T cells that recognize and kill human malignant mesothelioma tumor cells.
Conclusions: These studies provide the rationale for using the WT1 CD4+ peptides in conjunction with CD8+ peptide epitopes to vaccinate patients with WT1-expressing cancers.
August 3rd, 2007. Passive tumour targeting of polymer-coated adenovirus for cancer gene therapy
This is the first demonstration of passive tumour targeting of polymer-coated adenoviruses administered by intravenous injection, and also the first time pc-virus has been shown to be infectious following passive targeting to tumours in vivo. This technology provides an interesting option for delivery of therapeutic viruses to disseminated tumour masses by intravenous injection.
August 2nd, 2007. In vitro discrimination of tumor cell lines with an electronic nose
Conclusion: The electronic nose can distinguish between tumor cell lines in vitro and has the potential to be a useful screening test for cancer.
August 2nd, 2007. Malignant Mesothelioma Presenting as a Lip Tumor: Report of Two Cases With One Unrecognized by 166 Pathologists
twb@lycos. com Abstract Malignant mesothelioma is a relatively uncommon malignancy, but continues to increase in incidence in many countries around the world, including Australia.
August 2nd, 2007. h-Caldesmon, Calretinin, Estrogen Receptor, and Ber-EP4: A Useful Combination of Immunohistochemical Markers for Differentiating Epithelioid Peritoneal Mesothelioma From Serous Papillary Carcinoma of the Ovary
3%). The relationship between the values of sensitivity and specificity of each marker using receiver operating characteristic analysis permitted the identification of h-CD, calretinin, ER, and Ber-EP4 as the markers with the best performance in differentiating epithelioid peritoneal mesothelioma from serous papillary carcinoma of the ovary.
