July 31st, 2007. DNA methylation profile of 28 potential marker loci in malignant mesothelioma

0003). Examination of associations between methylation levels of the 28 loci and clinical parameters suggest associations of the methylation status of metallothionein genes with gender, histology, asbestos exposure, and lymph node involvement, and the methylation status of leucine zipper tumor suppressor 1 (LZTS1) and SLC6A20 with survival.

July 31st, 2007. Intradural pleural malignant mesothelioma

In this article, a MEDLINE literature review on intradural mesothelioma was conducted and four intradural mesothelioma cases in the English literature were retrieved: one in the intradural extramedullary location and three with intramedullary growth. Additionally, we report a 50-year-old patient with a pleural malignant mesothelioma that spreads across the dura into the spinal cord at T5.

July 31st, 2007. Fluorescence in situ hybridization : A new diagnostic dimension in cytology

Co-analysis of HPV and selected genes could become a useful approach in gynecological cytology. The spectrum of diagnostic FISH applications is continuously growing.

July 31st, 2007. Multicystic and well-differentiated papillary peritoneal mesothelioma treated by surgical cytoreduction and hyperthermic intra-peritoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC)

Conclusions: MPM and WDPPM are borderline tumors capable of transformation into potentially lethal processes. Definitive tumor eradication by means of cytoreduction and HIPEC seems more effective than debulking surgery in preventing disease recurrence or transition to aggressive malignancies.

July 31st, 2007. Case of asbestosis with massive benign pleural involvement

Pleural asbestosis. The authors stress importance of contemporary diagnostic techniques in occupational pathology.

July 26th, 2007. Dextran-based in situ cross-linked injectable hydrogels to prevent peritoneal adhesions

However, all cross-linked gels had very mild cytotoxicity. When applied in a rabbit sidewall defect-bowel abrasion model of adhesion formation, CMDX–CMC greatly reduced the formation of adhesions while CMDX–DX worsened them.

July 25th, 2007. Combined CA125 and Mesothelin Levels for the Diagnosis of Malignant Mesothelioma

Conclusion: Combining mesothelin and CA125 data does not improve the sensitivity of mesothelioma diagnosis over mesothelin alone. The use of both markers potentially increases the number of patients who can be monitored. Key Words: CA125, malignant mesothelioma, mesothelin, SMRP, tumor markers

July 25th, 2007. Low-molecular weight forms of cyclin E differentiate ovarian carcinoma from cells of mesothelial origin and are associated with poor survival in ovarian carcinoma

Conclusions: LMW forms of cyclin E differentiated ovarian carcinoma from benign and malignant mesothelial cells and were associated with increased protein expression using immunohistochemistry. The expression of LMW cyclin E forms was not associated with chemotherapy response, although it may be a marker of aggressive disease in patients with metastatic ovarian carcinoma.

July 24th, 2007. Pseudomesotheliomatous carcinoma of the lung

Immunohistochemically, the tumor was positive for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), but negative for calretinin, thrombomodulin, and pulmonary surfactant apoprotein. Final diagnosis was adenocarcinoma of the lung.

July 20th, 2007. Humanized anti-CD26 monoclonal antibody as a treatment for malignant mesothelioma tumors

Conclusions: Our data strongly suggest that humanized anti-CD26 mAb treatment may have potential clinical use as a novel cancer therapeutic agent in CD26-positive malignant mesothelioma.

July 20th, 2007. Malignant mesothelioma: global incidence and relationship with asbestos

The study of co-morbidity in mesothelioma could give an insight into the pathogenesis of the tumor. While a levelling-off in mesothelioma incidence has been registered in some countries, a worsening of the epidemic is predictable in large parts of the world.

July 20th, 2007. Methylation profiling of mesothelioma using real-time methylation-specific PCR: a pilot study

0%), while CCND2 methylation was not detected in any case. Although preliminary, we demonstrate that real-time MSP can be applied to archival specimens and gene methylation profiling may have potential to be a useful ancillary tool to help distinguish MM from RM.

July 20th, 2007. Modeling Mesothelioma Risk Associated with Environmental Asbestos Exposure

Conclusions: This study provides strong evidence that asbestos pollution from an industrial source greatly increases mesothelioma risk. Furthermore, relative risks from occupational exposure were underestimated and were markedly increased when adjusted for residential distance.

July 20th, 2007. Limited cardiotoxicity after extensive thoracic surgery and intraoperative hyperthermic intrathoracic chemotherapy with doxorubicin and cisplatin

Conclusions: Early cardiotoxicity is limited after this treatment modality using substantial doses of doxorubicin and cisplatin. Hence, this study suggests that intrathoracic chemotherapy with doxorubicin and/or cisplatin may be used for primary and secondary pleural malignancies, even immediately after extensive thoracic surgery, without concern of severe early cardiotoxicity.

July 18th, 2007. Clinical results of cytoreduction and HIPEC for malignant peritoneal mesothelioma

Finally, although the intensity of therapy is considerable, once recovered, the patients appear to enjoy a good HRQOL. Although not specific for patients with MPM, 2 reports have convincingly demonstrated that HRQOL is significantly improved after HIPEC.

July 17th, 2007. Pseudomesotheliomatous carcinoma of the lung with a distinct morphology, immunohistochemistry, and comparative genomic hybridization profile

The 4 cases resulted in death in less than 14 months, in spite of complete surgery and chemotherapy in 2 cases. Our aim is to complement the current understanding of this pseudomesotheliomatous "pneumocytic" carcinoma and alert pathologists to this rare entity to avoid misdiagnosis.

July 17th, 2007. Nicotine, lung and cancer

While tobacco carcinogens can initiate and promote tumorigenesis, the exposure to nicotine could confer a proliferative advantage to early tumors but there is no evidence that nicotine itself provokes cancer. This is supported by the findings that nicotine can prevent apoptosis induced by various agents - such as chemotherapeutic in NSCLC, conferring a survival advantage as well.

July 14th, 2007. The use of peritoneal mesothelium as a potential source of adult stem cells

The main concept emerging from this information is that peritoneal mesothelial cells are endowed with such a degree of plasticity that, if placed in the appropriate micro-environment, they have a remarkable potential to generate other mesenchymal-derived cell lines. Intensive research is required to define the best environmental conditions to take advantage of this plasticity and make the peritoneal mesothelium an actual option to be applied in regenerative medicine.

July 12th, 2007. Trousseau syndrome due to pleural mesothelioma

Conclusion: Attention should be paid to this syndrome when unexplained brain infarctions occur in patients with pleural mesothelioma.

July 11th, 2007. Gene expression profiling and gene copy-number changes in malignant mesothelioma cell lines

MM cell lines were characterized by copy-number changes associated with the TP53 apoptotic pathway already present at the first steps of in vitro culture. Prolonged culture led to acquisition of additional chromosomal copy-number changes associated with dysregulation of genes involved in cell adhesion, regulation of mitotic cell cycle, signal transduction, carbohydrate metabolism, motor activity, glycosaminoglycan biosynthesis, protein binding activity, lipid transport, ATP synthesis, and methyltransferase activity.
