April 27th, 2007. Spontaneous Peritoneal Malignant Mesothelioma in a Geriatric Japanese Macaque (Macaca fuscata)

Neoplastic cells were strongly positive to cytokeratin, and occasionally to vimentin. Based on gross and histopathological findings, this tumor was diagnosed as an epithelial type of peritoneal malignant mesothelioma, the first reported case in the non-human primates.

April 27th, 2007. Lymphohistiocytoid Variant of Malignant Mesothelioma of the Pleura: A Series of 22 Cases

We suggest that it should be reclassified as an epithelioid variant because of its similar behavioural characteristics. There was no evidence of Epstein-Barr virus-related infection.

April 26th, 2007. Malignant mesothelioma of the pleura and other malignancies in the same patient

Conclusions: In contrast with other series of the literature, in the present cases the co-existence of mesothelioma and other malignancies appeared as a relatively frequent event. The lack of a control group does not allow definite conclusions about the meaning of the occurrence. However, the co-existence of certain tumors with asbestos-related mesothelioma suggests that mesothelioma and associated malignancies might share some etiologic factors (asbestos and others).

April 25th, 2007. From Krukenberg to today: the ever present problems posed by metastatic tumors in the ovary. Part II.

In this area, as in a number of others considered in the review, immunohistochemistry may play a significant, sometimes crucial, role. However, as pointed out in brief concluding remarks, despite the aid of that modality, as in surgical pathology overall, careful consideration of the clinical background, distribution of disease, gross characteristics and spectrum of routine microscopic findings, will lead to the correct diagnosis in the majority of cases and at the very least lead to formulation of a considered differential diagnosis such that use of special techniques may be judicious and those results placed in context of the time-honored clinical and pathologic features.

April 25th, 2007. Malignant mesothelioma with intracytoplasmic crystalline inclusions

In the authors' experience this is a rare finding. The clinical information initially received was poor and electron microscopy was essential in making the correct diagnosis.

April 24th, 2007. Projected mesothelioma incidence in men in New South Wales

Conclusions: The pattern of parameter estimates in the two models was in accord with the known use of amphibole asbestos in Australia. The predicted peak year of 2014-2021 is 30 to 35 years after the phasing out of amphibole use, and this period is in accord with predictions for the UK and the US; in the latter country the peak was 10 to 15 years earlier corresponding to a discontinuation of amphibole use in the 1960s.

April 24th, 2007. Follow-up study of chrysotile textile workers: cohort mortality and exposure-response

Conclusions: This study confirms the findings from previous investigations of excess mortality from lung cancer and asbestosis and a strong exposure-response relationship between estimated exposure to chrysotile and mortality from lung cancer and asbestosis.

April 24th, 2007. Vermiculite, respiratory disease, and asbestos exposure in Libby, Montana: update of a cohort mortality study

Conclusions: The observed dose-related increases in asbestosis and lung cancer mortality highlight the need for better understanding and control of exposures that may occur when homeowners or construction workers (including plumbers, cable installers, electricians, telephone repair personnel, and insulators) disturb loose-fill attic insulation made with asbestos-contaminated vermiculite from Libby, Montana.

April 21st, 2007. Late-onset chylothorax following extrapleural pneumonectomy for mesothelioma

A repeat thoracotomy to ligate the lymphatic duct was performed because conservative management with chest tube drainage and no oral feeding was unsuccessful. The patient was discharged after the operation with a good clinical course.

April 20th, 2007. Compensation of malignant mesothelioma as an occupational disease in Lower Normandy, from 1995 to 2002

Conclusion: In order to improve the rate of compensation of occupational malignant mesothelioma cases, information about the usual occupational origin of the disease should be delivered systematically to the general practitioner of each patient. This could be done by pathologists, when they diagnose malignant mesothelioma, and/or by medical examiners when sickness benefits are sought, or even by the epidemiological center of death causes (INSERM, CépiDc), for the beneficiaries of patients who died from malignant mesothelioma.

April 19th, 2007. Chemokine receptors are infrequently expressed in malignant and benign mesothelial cells

This finding suggests a major role for an autocrine chemokine pathway in leukocytes but not in MM cells. The increased monocyte infiltration and their higher chemokine receptor expression in MM effusions may have a tumor-promoting rather than tumor-inhibiting effect.

April 19th, 2007. SV40 oncoproteins enhance asbestos-induced DNA double-strand breaks and abrogate senescence in murine mesothelial cells

These studies suggest that exposure to DNA-damaging agents can induce senescence in both murine and human mesothelioma cell lines and suggest a major, although not exclusive, role for p53 in this response. SV40 virus may contribute to mesothelioma progression by impairing stress-induced senescence, in part through p53 inactivation, thereby favoring survival and proliferation of mesothelial cells that have sustained DNA damage.

April 17th, 2007. Potential role of ferritin heavy chain in oxidative stress and apoptosis in human mesothelial and mesothelioma cells: implications for asbestos-induced oncogenesis

Suppression of the over-expressed FHC by using FHC siRNA rendered the MM cells sensitive to apoptosis, suggesting the contribution of FHC to apoptosis resistance of the MM cells. Our findings highlight the potential role of FHC in the pathogenesis of asbestos-induced mesothelioma.

April 17th, 2007. A large abdominal wall mass as an initial manifestation of malignant mesothelioma

Despite further radiotherapy, the patient died of cardiac tamponade due to tumor invasion 38 months after the initial diagnosis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first description of malignant mesothelioma presenting via initial invasion of the abdominal wall without changes in the thoracic space.

April 14th, 2007. Treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma

As other treatment methods, chemohyperthermia, treatments using various kinds of cytokines and angiogenesis inhibitors, genetic treatment and photodynamic therapy have been attempted. The current treatment results for this disease are very poor, and there has been a strong demand for establishing an effective treatment method.

April 13th, 2007. The role of asbestos fiber dimensions in the prevention of mesothelioma

Epidemiologic, experimental, and molecular evidence suggests that the arguments for the role of fiber size relative to dose, dose-response effect, and genetic susceptibility are scientifically unsound. Their proponent also states that means available in the past for the implementation of dust-control measures and/or personal protective equipment would not have contributed to reducing the frequency of mesothelioma among exposed subjects, an argument again based on invalid assumptions.

April 13th, 2007. Multicenter trial of neo-adjuvant chemotherapy followed by extrapleural pneumonectomy in malignant pleural mesothelioma

Conclusions: The observed rate of operability is promising. A median survival of 23 months for patients undergoing EPP compares favourably with the survival reported from single center studies of upfront surgery. This approach was not associated with an increase in psychological distress.

April 12th, 2007. Establishment of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay system to detect the amino terminal secretory form of rat Erc/Mesothelin.

There are several rat model systems of mesothelioma that may be promising tools in the development of an antimesothelioma treatment. We hope our ELISA to detect the soluble form of rat Erc/Mesothelin is useful in the rat model system to exploit the antimesothelioma therapy to be used in human cases.

April 12th, 2007. Catheter-Tract Metastases Associated With Chronic Indwelling Pleural Catheters

7% of 45 patients treated with indwelling pleural catheters for malignant pleural effusions. Both clinicians and patients should be aware of this potential complication.

April 11th, 2007. A case of malignant pleural mesothelioma with elevation of G-CSF and CYFRA in the serum and pleural fluid

Although CYFRA elevation in the serum and/or the pleural effusion in MPM patients has been previously reported, it has not been reported in any of the 5 MPM patients reported to have G-CSF elevation. Therefore, this is the first reported case of G-CSF-producing MPM with CYFRA elevation in both serum and the pleural effusion.
