February 28th, 2007. Ranpirnase: amphibian ribonuclease A, P-30 protein-alfacell.
6 423 515 B1) entitled 'Methods of Making Nucleic Acids Encoding Ribonucleases'. This patent is effective until 2020.
February 28th, 2007. Palliative treatment of primary lung tumors with transpulmonary chemoembolization (TPCE)
Conclusion: TPCE is a well-tolerated palliative treatment option for patients with primary lung tumors.
February 27th, 2007. Pleural mesothelioma in New Caledonia: an acute environmental concern
Conclusion: Pö did not explain all cases; only serpentinite in the soil was identified as a significant risk factor. A research project has been initiated in the area around Houailou, with the objective of constructing a model taking into account: exposure to the Pö, exposure to airborne pollution by asbestos fibres at the place of residence, and occupational exposure. Epidemiological and geological investigations are underway.
February 27th, 2007. Asbestos Induces Nitric Oxide Synthesis in Mesothelioma Cells via Rho Signaling Inhibition
Akt can stimulate NO synthesis via a double mechanism: it can activate the inducible NO synthase via the NF-κB pathway and the endothelial NO synthase via a direct phosphorylation. Our results suggest that crocidolite increases the NO levels in mesothelioma cells by modulating both NO synthase isoforms.
February 24th, 2007. Quantification of alternative mRNA species and identification of thioredoxin reductase 1 isoforms in human tumor cells
5, previously not identified in human cells, were detected by mass spectrometry. Our data show differential expression of TrxR1 mRNA forms in malignant mesothelioma of different phenotype, and investigation of alternative transcript variants of TrxR1 could be a valuable tool in the diagnostics and characterization of tumors.
February 24th, 2007. Immunohistochemical marker panels for distinguishing between epithelioid mesothelioma and lung adenocarcinoma
2, and EMA; 41% for CK 5/6; 47% for vimentin; 20% for thrombomodulin; 69% for mesothelin; 98% for CEA; 73% for CA19-9; and 80% for CA125. For distinguishing between epithelioid mesothelioma and lung adenocarcinoma, the combination of CEA, calretinin and each WT1 or thrombomodulin was suggested to be the best panel of immunohistochemical markers.
February 23rd, 2007. Investigation of allergic reactions to platinum salts
Conclusion: Hypersensitivity to platinum salts usually occurs after several courses of treatment. Skin tests and flow cytometry are a simple, concordant, and reliable way of confirming the diagnosis.

February 23rd, 2007. Therapeutic radiation for lymphoma: risk of malignant mesothelioma
Conclusions: Mesothelioma rates for patients who had received radiotherapy were increased for survivors of HL and NHL. No increases were observed among the unirradiated. These findings and the existing body of supporting studies confirmed that radiotherapy is a cause of mesothelioma. Cancer 2007.
February 23rd, 2007. Absence of SV40 antibodies or DNA fragments in prediagnostic mesothelioma serum samples
No viral DNA was found in the sera. No significant association between SV40 antibody response in prediagnostic sera and risk of mesothelioma was seen.
February 22nd, 2007. Preliminary Data Suggestive Of A Novel Translational Approach To Mesothelioma Therapy: Imatinib Mesylate With Gemcitabine Or Pemetrexed
Among chemotherapeutics tested in combination, Imatinib synergizes with Gemcitabine and Pemetrexed. We provide a rationale for a novel translational approach to mesothelioma therapy, relying on enhancement of tumor chemosensitivity, via inhibition of Akt.
February 20th, 2007. Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. Our experienced with triple combined therapy: cytoreduction, intraperitoneal perioperative chemotherapy and hyperthermia
Conclusions: Radical oncologic cytoreductive surgery combined with intraperitoneal perioperative chemotherapy provides good results with prolonged survival in selected cases, although morbidity is high. Based in our experience, biphasic sarcomatous mesotheliomas should be excluded from

February 20th, 2007. Pemetrexed: biochemical and cellular pharmacology, mechanisms, and clinical applications
This is due to concurrent contraction of competing cellular physiologic folates and utilization of a novel second transport carrier for which pemetrexed has high affinity, recently identified as the proton-coupled folate transporter (PCFT). Laboratory studies are reviewed that raise the possibility of new approaches to the use of folic acid supplementation in clinical regimens with pemetrexed.
February 16th, 2007. Expanded access program in the United States and Alimta program for malignant mesothelioma patients
Eli Lilly conducted Alimta Expanded Access Programs for 1200 malignant mesothelioma patients with free of charge and obtained clinical efficacy and severe adverse events. The system development for Expanded Access Program should be discussed for future Japanese participation to this program.
February 14th, 2007. Restored expression of the MYO18B gene suppresses orthotopic growth and the production of bloody pleural effusion by human malignant pleural mesothelioma cells in SCID mice
Furthermore, it also suppressed the production of bloody pleural effusion after orthotopic injection. These findings suggest that the restored expression of MYO18B may be a useful therapeutic strategy for the treatment of locally advanced MPM in humans.
February 14th, 2007. Age and sex differences in malignant mesothelioma after residential exposure to blue asbestos (crocidolite)
Conclusions: Former residents of a crocidolite mining town have a high rate of mesothelioma. The rate is higher in male subjects and those 15 years of age at first exposure, but women have a steeper dose-response curve.
February 13th, 2007. Benign cystic mesothelioma presenting as a huge pelvic mass–a case report
All tumoral markers were within normal range. Surgical [corrected] treatment consisted of radical excision of the mass and the prognosis was good [corrected].
February 10th, 2007. MESOMARK™: A Potential Test for Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma
Conclusions: The MESOMARK assay is analytically robust and may be useful for the detection and management of mesothelioma.
February 10th, 2007. Polymorphisms of glutathione-S-transferase M1 and manganese superoxide dismutase are associated with the risk of malignant pleural mesothelioma
No effect was found for GSTA2, GSTA4, GSTM3, GSTP1 and GSTT1 genes. These findings, if replicated, contribute substantial evidence to the hypothesis that oxidative stress and cellular antireactive oxygen species systems are involved in the pathogenesis and in the natural history of MPM.
February 9th, 2007. Extrapulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis presented as the asymptomatic retroperitoneal tumours–two cases report
The second case illustrates the hormone dependent growth of lymphangiomyoma and LAM development in young women. It is difficult to prove the presence of pulmonary LAM at the time of tumours excision but both cases demonstrate importance of appropriate LAM diagnosis and being aware of such diagnosis in cases presenting with extrapulmonary extension of the disease.
February 8th, 2007. Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma
During surgery we discovered a tumor with cystic parts, intense vascularized, which turn to be adherent in the upper side to the lower face of the left midriff cupola, to the spleen superior pole and 1/3 middle level of the great gastric curve. It was performed surgical ablation of the tumor, splenectomy with favorable postoperative evolution, the patient being now under chemotherapy treatment.
