January 19th, 2007. Kallikrein 4 is expressed in malignant mesothelioma – Further evidence for the histogenetic link between mesothelial and epithelial cells

In conclusion, hK4 is frequently expressed in MM, with higher levels detected in solid tumors, although its expression is more limited than in gynecological adenocarcinomas. The presence of hK4 in MM, a non-hormonally regulated tumor, provides further support to the histogenetic link between mesothelial and epithelial cells.

January 18th, 2007. Mortality and hospital discharges in the population of Biancavilla (Sicily) contaminated by natural fibres

Conclusions: the excesses observed in this study are consistent with previous findings and suggest the need for further investigations aimed at improving the knowledge of the mineralogical aspects of the fibres, the assessment of human exposure and at estimating the prevalence of pleural plaques and lung fibrosis.

January 17th, 2007. Bcl2/bcl-x(L) Inhibitor Engenders Apoptosis and Increases Chemosensitivity in Mesothelioma

Synergistic inhibition of tumor growth by the co-administration of cisplatin and 2-methoxy antimycin A3 was observed in both in vitro and in vivo experiments. Together, these findings indicate that exposure of cancer cells to small molecule Bcl-2/xl inhibitors such as 2-methoxy antimycin A3 alone, or in the combination with other chemotherapeutics, may represent a novel therapeutic strategy in treatment of cancer, especially mesothelioma.

January 16th, 2007. Laparoscopy in the evaluation of women with unexplained ascites: an invaluable diagnostic tool

Conclusion: Laparoscopy is a valuable means of assessing the peritoneal cavity in patients with unexplained ascites, where the primary cause remains unclear. The diagnosis can be accurately made with selective biopsy specimens, and appropriate treatment can be instituted without delay.

January 16th, 2007. Metastases to the breast from extramammary malignancies: a clinicopathologic study of 12 cases

Thus, an accurate diagnosis is important to avoid unnecessary mutilating surgery. These masses generally indicate disseminated metastatic disease, with a very poor survival rate.

January 16th, 2007. Cluster of malignant mesothelioma cases in a thermostat manufacturing industry

Conclusion: The results underline the importance of a close cooperation within Local Occupational Health Units and Mesothelioma Registry in the identification and evaluation of asbestos occupational exposure otherwise not recognized, determining thus the loss of precious information.

January 12th, 2007. Expression of vascular endothelial growth factor in malignant mesothelioma

Furthermore, the expression of VEGF did not impact on the survival of patients with malignant mesothelioma. Although VEGF expression might be important for tumor development and maintenance, it was not identified as a prognostic factor in malignant mesothelioma.

January 12th, 2007. Differential effects of Ca(2+) on bisphosphonate-induced growth inhibition in breast cancer and mesothelioma cells

These findings may be of physiological relevance since many tumor types are calcified. They further suggest that bisphosphonates can accumulate in tumors that are growing at the visceral sites and that differences in tumor accumulation of bisphosphonates may regulate their in vivo sensitivity to these drugs.

January 11th, 2007. Point of view of Italian regions

The debate, which had risen around the sanitary surveillance of the formerly-exposed to occupational carcinogenic agents workers, had induced indeed many institutions to take decisions on issues which were not yet explicitly regulated by the national law. For example the guidelines provided suggestions regarding what bodies--either public or private--should be appointed to this task, or the kind of protocols should be adopted with all the related collective and individual consequences.

January 11th, 2007. Identification and characterization of putative tumor suppressor NGB, a GTP-binding protein that interacts with the neurofibromatosis 2 protein

Finally, the tumor suppressor functions of NGB require merlin and are linked to its ability to suppress cyclin D1 expression. Collectively, these findings indicate that NGB is a tumor suppressor that regulates and requires merlin to suppress cell proliferation.

January 6th, 2007. Thoracic stop-flow perfusion in the treatment of refractory malignant pleural mesothelioma: a phase I-II evaluation/trial

4%. Our data show that TSP is a relatively effective second-line treatment in patients with progressive disease after systemic chemotherapy, with a low rate of major complications and treatment-related toxicity.

January 3rd, 2007. Impact of lymph node metastasis on outcome after extrapleural pneumonectomy for malignant pleural mesothelioma

Conclusions: The presence of N2 disease negatively affects the prognosis of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma. Mediastinoscopy, however, seems to have a limited role in patient selection for extrapleural pneumonectomy. Adjuvant hemithoracic radiation therapy but not N2 disease affects the risk of locoregional recurrence
