Journal Articles on Mesothelioma: December, 2006

December 8th, 2006. Circulating CA125 in Patients with Peritoneal Mesothelioma Treated with Cytoreductive Surgery and Intraperitoneal Hyperthermic Perfusion

Conclusions: CA125 was elevated in the majority of patients with PM in the present series. Serial maker measurements paralleled tumor growth or regression after CRS and IPHP, suggesting the need of further studies to assess the role of CA125 in this clinical setting.

December 6th, 2006. A case of malignant mesothelioma presenting with recurrent pneumothorax

The histological examination of the biopsied subcutaneous tumor showed mixed type malignant pleural mesothelioma. Chemotherapy with gemcitabine and vinorelbine could not control the progression.

December 6th, 2006. In vivo Loss of Expression of Argininosuccinate Synthetase in Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma Is a Biomarker for Susceptibility to Arginine Depletion

Conclusions: In summary, we have identified AS negativity as a frequent event in MPM in vivo, leading to susceptibility to cytotoxicity following restriction of arginine. A phase II clinical trial is planned to evaluate the role of arginine depletion in patients with AS-negative MPM.

December 6th, 2006. Efficacy and safety of first- or second-line irinotecan, cisplatin, and mitomycin in mesothelioma

Conclusions: IPM appeared to have a reasonable response rate with an acceptable toxicity profile in the first- and second-line treatment of MPM.

December 5th, 2006. Incidental finding of a malignant peritoneal mesothelioma in an inguinal hernia sac: report of a case

The incidence of this neoplasm is 2-2. 6 cases per million annually, and the prognosis is very poor.

December 2nd, 2006. Guidelines of the French Speaking Society for Chest Medicine for management of malignant pleural mesothelioma

Therefore, an optimal treatment of MPM is not clearly defined yet, despite the introduction of recent drugs. Between April 2005 and January 2006, the French Speaking Society for Chest Medicine (SPLF), in collaboration with other French scientific societies, brought together experts on mesothelioma to draw up recommendations in order to provide clinicians with clear, concise, up-to-date guidelines on management of MPM, presented in this report.

December 1st, 2006. Relationship between the malignant mesothelioma and simian virus 40 in China: a study of 17 cases

Conclusions: The study shows that malignant mesothelioma in China may be independent of SV40 infection.
