Journal Articles on Mesothelioma: December, 2006
December 31st, 2006. Comparison of the French DRG based information system (PMSI) with the National Mesothelioma Surveillance Program database
Conclusion: Because of lack of diagnosis certification, mistakes in encoding diagnosis and the fact that incident and prevalent cases cannot be distinguished in the hospital national database make it impossible to estimate the mesothelioma incidence solely from this source of data. However, the hospital claim databases constitute a complementary source of information for the active search of incident cases performed by the National Mesothelioma Surveillance Program.
December 29th, 2006. Compression of the right main bronchus by a mesothelioma
A quickly progressive dyspnea developed which was due to compression of the right main bronchus by mediastinal extension of the tumor. This obstruction was treated by interventionnal bronchoscopy and stenting.
December 29th, 2006. Immunohistochemical detection of GLUT-1 can discriminate between reactive mesothelium and malignant mesothelioma
On the other hand, no RM cases were positive for GLUT-1. GLUT-1 is a sensitive and specific immunohistochemical marker enabling differential diagnosis of RM from MPM, whereas it cannot discriminate MPM from lung carcinoma.
December 26th, 2006. A phase II study of intrapleural immuno-chemotherapy, pleurectomy/decortication, radiotherapy, systemic chemotherapy and long-term sub-cutaneous IL-2 in stage II-III malignant pleural mesothelioma
Conclusions: The multimodality treatment we adopted for stage II-III MPM was feasible, well tolerated by most of the patients and produced a favourable outcome. New targeted therapies are awaited for further improvements in the treatment of this disease.

December 25th, 2006. Subcutaneous metastasis of peritoneal mesothelioma diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration
Although subcutaneous metastasis of malignant mesothelioma is a rare entity, one must always keep this possibility in mind and proceed to further investigation of such lesions. In these cases, FNA is a simple diagnostic procedure for the identification of metastatic disease in patients with a prior history of malignancy.
December 23rd, 2006. Prolonged survival due to spontaneous regression and surgical excision of malignant mesothelioma
During a 12-year follow-up there was a single recurrence, which was a lesion in the chest wall at 6 years that was surgically excised. A prominent host response to tumor was seen in both the primary tumor and the recurrence.
December 21st, 2006. Compensation of asbestos victims in France
Amiens Nord Teaching Hospital, France. Abstract The alarming development of pathologies linked to asbestos led to the creation in France of two funds to indemnify the victims of asbestos-related illnesses: the FCAATA (Fund for asbestos workers who take early retirement), which compensates for their reduced life expectancy, and the FIVA (Indemnification fund for asbestos victims) which ensures full compensation for harm suffered by asbestos victims.
December 21st, 2006. Dramatic tumour response to pemetrexed single-agent in an elderly patient with malignant peritoneal mesothelioma: a case report
Conclusion: Single-agent pemetrexed is a treatment option for malignant peritoneal mesothelioma in selected elderly patients or in patients with unpaired performance status.
December 21st, 2006. The role of asbestos fibre dimensions in the pathogenesis and prevention of mesothelioma
A review of the epidemiological, experimental, and molecular literature suggests that Chiappino's statements on the role of dose, dose-response effect, and genetic susceptibility are scientifically unsound Chiappino states that, in the past, in the workplaces where use and exposure to asbestos were not stopped, any reduction in the intensity of exposure by means of dust control measures or personal protective equipment would not have contributed to reduce the frequency of mesothelioma. In the authors' opinion the underlying assumptions are invalid.
December 21st, 2006. Asbestos Redirects Nitric Oxide Signaling through Rapid Catalytic Conversion to Nitrite
These data highlight the ability of asbestos to induce phenotypic cellular changes through two processes: (a) by directly reducing bioactive NO levels and preventing its subsequent interaction with target molecules and (b) by increasing oxidative damage and protein modifications through NO2 production and 3-nitrotyrosine formation. (Cancer Res 2006; 66(24): 11600-4).
December 21st, 2006. Carcinogenicity and Chronic Toxicity in Rats and Mice Exposed by Inhalation to 1,2-Dichloroethane for Two Years
The present findings suggest that those carcinogenic responses be primarily considered for standard setting of occupational and environmental exposure to DCE. Key words: 1,2-Dichloroethane, Inhalation, Carcinogenicity, Rat, Mouse, Chronic toxicity.
December 19th, 2006. Mesothelioma incidence and time trend in the worlds
Conclusions: These results confirmed a relationship between Mm risk and asbestos use, revealing high incidence rates in Australia (mining), Italy (shipyards, building, goods handling, heavy industries and sea trade) and Great Britain (shipyards). Mm cases increased in areas with elevated incidence rates, suggesting that larger amounts of asbestos were probably used for a longer period. Finally, no Mm cases were registered in some areas, which probably signifies a lack (or a delay) of risk referred to the investigated period.
December 19th, 2006. A retrospective analysis of malignant pleural mesothelioma patients treated either with chemotherapy or best supportive care between 1990 and 2005; A single institution experience
We observed that stages 3 and 4 patients with epithelial cell type got benefit from CT. Especially, of epithelial cell type stages 1 and 2 should receive multimodal treatment.
December 16th, 2006. Development of novel therapeutic strategies for lung cancer: targeting the cholinergic system
Furthermore apoptosis mechanisms are under the control of the cholinergic system (nicotine antiapoptotic via induction of NF-κB complexes and phosphorylation of Bad at S112, curare proapoptotic via G0-G1 arrest p21waf-1-dependent, but p53- independent) [16]. The involvement of the non-neuronal cholinergic system in lung cancer and mesothelioma appears reasonable and opens up new translational research strategies.
December 14th, 2006. Bacteriological and mycological analysis of material taken from lower respiratory tract in patients with malignancy
Conclusions: Identification of the potential etiological agents of lower respiratory tract infections can be useful in the rational management of the antibiotics policy in the patients with maliganacy.
December 14th, 2006. Sensitivity and specificity of immunohistochemical antibodies used to distinguish between benign and malignant pleural disease: a systematic review of published reports
Conclusions: Immunohistochemistry is of limited value, but newer diagnostic methods may be useful additions in this area of pathology. The diagnostic importance of histological features seen on plain tissue sections is emphasized as vital for correctly differentiating between benign pleural disease and malignant pleural mesothelioma.
December 13th, 2006. Cadherin expression in ovarian carcinoma and malignant mesothelioma cell effusions
Conclusion: MM and OC/PPC coexpress different cadherin family members. P-cadherin, E-cadherin and N-cadherin are not useful for differentiation between OC/PPC and MM in effusions.
December 11th, 2006. Characterization of the biological properties of acid-treated chrysotile-asbestos fibers
Thus, the altered physicochemical properties of the fibrillar surface of asbestos diminished its biological aggressiveness; however, increased treatment rates failed to lead to its further decrease. There was no relationship of the biological properties to the number and force of electric charges of the surface.
