Archive for November, 2006

November 30th, 2006. A systematic review on the efficacy of cytoreductive surgery combined with perioperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy for diffuse malignancy peritoneal mesothelioma

Conclusions: This systematic review evaluated the current evidence for CRS and PIC for DMPM. Seven observational studies were available for assessment, which demonstrated an improved overall survival, as compared to historical controls, using systemic chemotherapy and palliative surgery.

November 30th, 2006. Disseminated Intravascular Coagulopathy Caused by Intracardiac Mesothelioma

Her symptoms were completely relieved by emergency resection of the tumor. Primary resection of the intracardiac mesothelioma is adequate treatment for this complicated surgical problem.

November 30th, 2006. SV40 and human cancer: A review of recent data

In epidemiologic studies, the increased incidence of some of the suspect tumors in the 1970s to 1980s was not related to the risk of exposure to SV40-contaminated vaccines. In summary, the most recent evidence does not support the notion that SV40 contributed to the development of human cancers.

November 28th, 2006. Diffuse intra-abdominal clear cell myomelanocytic tumor: report of an unusual presentation of “PEComatosis” simulating peritoneal mesothelioma

We believe that this case represents an example of myomelanocytic tumor of uncertain biologic potential, a member of the recently devised perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComa), with an unusual presentation simulating a diffuse mesothelial neoplasm. The origin of this particular lesion is briefly discussed in light of the recent literature published on the subject.

November 23rd, 2006. PET: other thoracic malignancies

PET can be helpful in detecting distant spread from invasive thymomas and thymic carcinomas. Similarly, PET may be used to assess the extent of disease in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma, thereby facilitating optimal therapy approaches.

November 23rd, 2006. The diagnostic utility of D2-40 for malignant mesothelioma versus pulmonary carcinoma with pleural involvement

Conversely, to differentiate between MM and PSCC, p63 and WT-1 are the best available markers. We recommend a panel of CK5/6, p63, D2-40, and WT-1 to differentiate MM from pulmonary carcinomas in effusion cytology specimens.

November 23rd, 2006. CT-guided percutaneous transthoracic biopsy in the evaluation of undetermined pulmonary lesions

Gender, smoking, location, pleural tag, homogenous attenuation, cavitation, calcification, necrosis and air bronchogram did not differ significantly between benign and malignant nodules. This study shows that CT-guided PTB is a safe and effective procedure in the evaluation of undetermined pulmonary lesions.

November 23rd, 2006. Measurements of asbestos burden in tissues

In either of these cases the quality of information is directly dependent on the preparative techniques and instrumentation used in the analysis. The present article will discuss the significance of findings of tissue burden based on both these variables.

November 23rd, 2006. Asbestos ban in India: challenges ahead

Industrial hygiene assessment is seldom carried out and pathologists do not receive training in identifying mesothelioma histopathologically. The lack of political will and powerful influence of the asbestos industry are pushing India toward a disaster of unimaginable proportion.

November 23rd, 2006. Carcinogens in the Construction Industry

g. , to dust, seems a feasible way to reduce the risk.

November 23rd, 2006. Adverse Health Effects of Fluoro-Edenitic Fibers

In this frame, special emphasis is given to the issue of communication, both to the general public and to target groups like family doctors, teachers, and media professionals. This experience could represent a useful basis for the elaboration of a strategy to approach similar environmental issues.

November 23rd, 2006. The Economic Costs of Health Service Treatments for Asbestos-Related Mesothelioma Deaths

Many lung cancer cases due to asbestos exposure occur globally for each mesothelioma case. Hence figures provided in this article are certain to be gross underestimates of the total health service and personal economic costs of asbestos illness and treatment in Scotland.

November 17th, 2006. A novel SV40 TAg transgenic model of asbestos-induced mesothelioma: malignant transformation is dose dependent

In contrast, cell lines developed from mesothelial cells of animals carrying multiple copies of TAg were growth factor independent and could be cloned at limiting dilution in soft agar. These data provide the first in vivo demonstration of co-carcinogenicity between SV40 and asbestos.

November 16th, 2006. The Cell-Adhesion and Signaling Molecule PECAM-1 is a Molecular Mediator of Resistance to Genotoxic Chemotherapy

Taken together, these data demonstrate that endogenous PECAM-1 expression on lymphoid cancers confers resistance to apoptosis, and that lowering PECAM-1 expression in lymphoid malignancies can render them more susceptible to chemotherapy-induced apoptosis. In addition, reducing PECAM-1 levels in the tumor endothelium may aid in low-dose, anti-angiogenic therapy.

November 15th, 2006. Occupational exposure to eight organic dusts and respiratory cancer among Finns

Conclusions: Exposure to organic dusts is unlikely to be a major risk factor of respiratory cancer. Even exposure to wood dust which is a major exposure in Finland seems to have minor effect for nasal cancer. The authors found suggestive evidence that exposure to grain dust may increase the risk of laryngeal cancer, and some support to the hypothesis that exposure to textile dust, and to plant and animal dust (agricultural dusts) may decrease the risk of lung cancer.

November 15th, 2006. Use of mesothelin as a marker for mesothelial cells in cytologic specimens

As a marker for mesothelial cells, the sensitivity and specificity of mesothelin were 73% and 55%, respectively, and the sensitivity and specificity of calretinin were 95% and 86%, respectively. Therefore, mesothelin is not a sensitive or a specific marker for mesothelial cells in cytologic specimens when compared with calretinin.

November 11th, 2006. Phase I Study of Decitabine-Mediated Gene Expression in Patients with Cancers Involving the Lungs, Esophagus, or Pleura

Conclusion: Prolonged DAC infusions can modulate gene expression in primary thoracic malignancies. These findings support further evaluation of DNA-demethylating agents alone or in combination with other regimens targeting induced gene products for the treatment of these neoplasms.

November 11th, 2006. Extension of liver tissue into the thorax following a right extrapleural pneumonectomy for malignant pleural mesothelioma

Two years after the operation, an intrathoracic mass was suspected of recurrence by imaging, however, biopsy revealed that the mass was actively proliferating liver tissues. We discussed this condition in terms of ectopic liver proliferation.

November 11th, 2006. Aberrant promoter methylation of insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 gene in human cancers

079). In summary, our results showed that IGFBP-3 methylation played an important role in the silencing of its expression, suggesting that IGFBP-3 may act as a tumor suppressor gene in several human cancers examined.

November 10th, 2006. Single-arm, open label study of pemetrexed plus cisplatin in chemotherapy naïve patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma: Outcomes of an expanded access program

Conclusions: In this large cohort, 67.7% of patients treated with first-line chemotherapy experienced a response or stable disease. Survival time and toxicity from this EAP were promising for this difficult-to-treat disease.
