September 30th, 2006. Mesothelioma after lung transplantation
This is thought to be the first such report. Mesothelioma should be suspected in lung transplant recipients with a haemorrhagic pleural effusion in the native lung when there is no convincing evidence for bronchogenic carcinoma or post transplant lymphoproliferative disease, even in the absence of exposure to asbestos.
September 30th, 2006. Early response evaluation in malignant pleural mesothelioma by positron emission tomography with [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose
Conclusion: The use of MR evaluated by FDG-PET in the assessment of treatment efficacy in MPM appears promising. Our observations need to be validated in a larger prospective series.

September 29th, 2006. Recurrent pericardial effusion as initial manifestation of primary diffuse pericardial malignant mesothelioma
Diffuse malignant pericardial mesothelioma was diagnosed after mediastinal mass biopsy. The patient underwent further oncological evaluation followed by chemotherapy.
September 29th, 2006. Pleural Mesothelioma: Sensitivity and Incidence of Needle Track Seeding after Image-guided Biopsy versus Surgical Biopsy
Conclusion: Image-guided core-needle biopsy in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma has a lower incidence of needle track seeding than surgical biopsy and has a high sensitivity for diagnosis.
September 29th, 2006. Benign multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma: A case report and review of the literature
Complete resection of the lesion was performed. The patient had an uneventful recovery and had no recurrence two years after surgery.
September 27th, 2006. Positron emission tomography predicts survival in malignant pleural mesothelioma
Conclusions: Standard uptake value greater than 10, mixed histology, and stages III and IV are poor risk factors in malignant pleural mesothelioma. These findings suggest that fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography can be used to stratify patients for treatment and clinical trials.
September 27th, 2006. Pemetrexed-induced edema of the eyelid
We experienced a patient who developed the valuable edema of the eyelid. We believe that medical oncologists should be aware of this rare adverse event, although the mechanism responsible for it is not yet known.
September 27th, 2006. Expression of Snail, Slug and Sip1 in malignant mesothelioma effusions is associated with matrix metalloproteinase, but not with cadherin expression
E-cadherin, N-cadherin and P-cadherin expression was found in 69/110 (63%), 87/110 (79%) and 84/110 (76%) MM cases, respectively. Pleural and peritoneal MM showed comparable expression, but all three cadherins were upregulated in effusions compared to solid tumors (p.
September 25th, 2006. Recurrent pneumothorax as alone manifestation of mesothelioma pleurae
Specimens of lung and pleurae were examinated. Result of microscopic and immunohistochemical examination was: mesothelioma epithelioides pleurae (mesothelium +, calretyninaa +, EMA+ membrane reaction, desmine +/-).
September 25th, 2006. The Extracellular Domain of p185(c-neu) Induces Density-Dependent Inhibition of Cell Growth in Malignant Mesothelioma Cells and Reduces Growth of Mesothelioma In Vivo
Tyrosine kinase inhibitors of EGFR did not cause density-dependent inhibition of cell growth of malignant mesothelioma cells. Therefore, simultaneously inhibiting the malignant phenotype and inducing density-dependent inhibition of cell growth in malignant mesothelioma cells by the extracellular domain of p185(c-neu) may represent an important therapeutic advance.
September 25th, 2006. Biology and management of malignant pleural mesothelioma
Studies with anti-angiogenesis agents are ongoing. An improvement of the knowledge of major molecular pathways involved in malignant mesothelioma is needed in order to define proper targets for the systemic treatment of this disease.
September 25th, 2006. Malignant mesothelioma of the pleura among seafarers
Conclusions: When compared with shipyard workers, the seamen with mesothelioma show signs of less intense exposure to asbestos, and longer latency periods. Mesothelioma in seamen should be considered as an occupational disease.
September 25th, 2006. Sixty years on: the price of assembling military gas masks in 1940
Interpretation: These findings in a cohort followed over 60 years after brief exposure to crocidolite confirm a high and specific risk of mesothelioma (28% peritoneal) and perhaps of lung cancer some 20-50 years later. The statistically significant absence of further mesothelioma cases during the past eight years suggests that crocidolite, though durable, is slowly removed.
September 25th, 2006. An atypical presentation of thymoma with diffuse pleural dissemination mimicking mesothelioma
Here, we report a case of advanced thymoma mimicking malignant pleural mesothelioma, with circumferential encasement of the lung. A brief review of the literature with special reference to radiological imaging on thymoma also is presented.
September 25th, 2006. Clinical practice guideline on peritoneal carcinomatosis treatment using surgical cytoreduction and hyperthermic intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy
Given the morbidity and mortality associated with this treatment, this procedure requires a high level of expertise. Considering the evidence available, the CEPO recommends: 1) that complete cytoreduction followed by HIPEC be used in a clinical research context only, preferably in the presence of an isolated peritoneal carcinomatosis stemming from colorectal cancer, cancer of the appendix, peritoneal pseudomyxoma, or mesothelioma of the peritoneum; 2) that studies be conducted only in specialized centers with the necessary expertise and technical resources.
September 15th, 2006. Banning asbestos in Asia: campaigns and strategies by the Asian Network for the Rights of Occupational Accident Victims (ANROAV)
This deadly substance is killing workers. Unless drastic action is taken to stop its use, Asian workers as well as the general population will pay a heavy price.
September 15th, 2006. Malignant mesothelioma - diagnosis and treatment strategies
Combined modalities have a better prognosis in selected patients with epithelioid histology, clear resection margins, and no positive extrapleural nodes. Chemotherapy using new antimetabolite agents in combination with platinum compounds is useful for palliation and can improve both survival and quality of life compared with single-agent cisplatin.
September 15th, 2006. Chemotherapy in malignant pleural mesothelioma
Results: Polichemotherapy was administered to 16 patients (15 men, 1 woman) with mean age of 61.4 (44-76) years. Thirteen patients had an initial PS=0/1; ten patients had professional contact with products presumably containing asbestos; histology results identified epithelial-type in 14 patients and mixed-type in 2; all patients were in stages III or IV; diagnosis was made by VATS in 14 patients, blind pleural biopsy in 1 patient and guided transthoracic biopsy in 1 patient. Thirteen patients had palliative radiotherapy over the area submitted to specimen collection. We obtained partial responses in 4 patients (25%), stability in 6 (37.5%) and progression in 6 (37.5%). Mean number of chemotherapy sessions was 4.5. To date (September, 2005) 15 patients have died. Mean length to progression was 6.4 months (2-14) and survival 13.8 months (4-29). We observed 7 cases of neutropenia (grades 3 and 4), 2 of which were febrile neutropenia with hospital admission. Reflection: Our results regarding this rare pathology were similar to those found in the literature. It would be interesting to collect national data from all units that treat or have treated MPM; a clinical study comparing the actual chemotherapy regimen to one of those used previously would be another interesting approach to this pathology.
September 15th, 2006. Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) - 5 years of experience
Discussion: S rarely is the treatment of choice, once most of the patients have local advanced disease, old age and comorbilities. The epithelium mesothelioma was the prevalent histological type and because of the few number of patients with other types, it was not possible to establish significant relationships between the histological type and the overall survival. The survival tends to increase, 3 patients were treated with second line Ct and 1 with third line Ct.
