July 13th, 2006. Plasma vitamin concentrations and incidence of mesothelioma and lung cancer in individuals exposed to crocidolite at Wittenoom, Western Australia

Vitamin E concentrations were not significantly associated with mesothelioma or lung cancer incidence. These findings suggest that people with chronically low plasma levels of retinol have increased risk of developing mesothelioma and lung cancer.

July 11th, 2006. 18-Fluoro-deoxy-glucose (15FDG) positon emission tomography (PET) for the evaluation of malignant pleural disease

SUV > 4 associated with a non-epithelial tumor is a sign of poor prognosis. For mesotheliomas, FDG uptake can be used to assess the effect of chemotherapy and determine whether patients are good responders or not.

July 11th, 2006. Physical Instability of Frozen Pemetrexed Solutions in PVC Bags

Conclusions: Although pemetrexed is chemically stable for 90 days frozen at -20 degrees C, substantial numbers of microparticulates formed in pemetrexed diluted in the infusion solutions in PVC bags upon long-term frozen storage. The avoidance of freezing pemetrexed solutions in PVC bags is therefore warranted.

July 11th, 2006. Divided dose of cisplatin combined with gemcitabine in malignant mesothelioma

There was no treatment related death. Divided dose of cisplatin combined with gemcitabine, at the current dosage and schedule, appears to be an active regimen in chemotherapy-naive patients with malignant mesothelioma, and well-tolerated.

July 11th, 2006. Assessment of Differential Pulmonary Blood Flow Using Perfusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Comparison With Radionuclide Perfusion Scintigraphy

Conclusions: Pulmonary perfusion MRI can be used to assess the differential blood flow of the lung. Further studies in a larger group of patients are required to fully confirm the clinical suitability of this imaging method.

July 6th, 2006. The role of radiation therapy in malignant pleural mesothelioma: A systematic review

Conclusion: There is limited evidence for the role of radiotherapy in the management of patients with MPM. Future studies including radiotherapy for the treatment of such patients should include formal measures of quality of life and symptom control.

July 5th, 2006. Therapeutic potential of antisense oligodeoxynucleotides to down-regulate thymidylate synthase in mesothelioma

Thus, antisense TS-mediated induction of apoptosis may be the basis for the high malignant mesothelioma sensitivity to antisense targeting of TS. Further preclinical and clinical study of TS antisense oligodeoxynucleotides, alone and in combination with TS-targeting chemotherapy drugs, in mesothelioma is warranted.

July 5th, 2006. D2-40 is Not a Specific Marker for Cells of Mesothelial Origin in Serous Effusions

Pulmonary, breast, and nonovarian gynecologic tumors usually showed weak focal membranous staining, whereas the ovarian adenocarcinomas showed an expression pattern more similar to mesotheliomas. The results from the present study suggest low specificity for D2-40 as a mesothelial marker, especially in the context of differentiating mesothelial cells from ovarian carcinoma, and argue against its inclusion in the diagnostic panel of serous effusions.

July 5th, 2006. Epithelioid and sarcomatoid malignant pleural mesothelioma in endoscopic gastric biopsies: A diagnostic pitfall

We herein present the first two cases of MM (one each of EM and SM) of the pleura, presenting in endoscopic gastric biopsies as small polypoid lesions and poorly healing ulcers 30 and 35 months after the initial diagnosis of pleural MM, respectively. The major differential diagnoses encompass primary or metastatic adenocarcinoma in case one and cytokeratin-positive (KIT negative!) GI stromal tumors (GISTs) and sarcomatoid carcinoma in case two, as well as other rare entities.

July 3rd, 2006. Alteration of pemetrexed excretion in the presence of acute renal failure and effusions: presentation of a case and review of the literature

Dialysis was unsuccessful in removing pemetrexed. Theoretical and practical approaches to management of similar cases are presented.

July 3rd, 2006. Progression-free survival rate as primary end point for phase II cancer clinical trials: application to mesothelioma – The EORTC Lung Cancer Group

Conclusion: These values may be used to define relevant P0 and P1 values in future phase II mesothelioma trials that use PFSR as the primary end point.
