Journal Articles on Mesothelioma: July, 2006
July 31st, 2006. Prophylactic examinations of workers formerly employed in asbestos processing plants: outcome of the Amiantus project in 2000-2004
Conclusion: The implementation of the Amiantus project has contributed to an increased detection of pathologies related with exposure to asbestos fibers. A growing proportion of radiograms, which indicate worsening of health condition provides evidence that morbid processes in the respiratory system are progressing in persons who in the past were occupationally exposed to asbestos dust.
July 28th, 2006. Histiocytoid eccrine sweat gland carcinoma of the eyelid: report of a case
However, a metastatic lesion was excluded by clinical and imaging investigations. There has been no recurrence 3 years after primary excision.
July 27th, 2006. p53-Induced Apoptosis Occurs in the Absence of p14(ARF) in Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma
However, it is noteworthy that only survivin downregulation sensitized cells to CDDP-induced apoptosis. These results suggest that p53 is functional in the absence of p14(ARF) in MPM and that targeting of the downstream apoptosis inhibitor survivin can sensitize to CDDP-induced apoptosis.
July 26th, 2006. Pleural Mesothelioma in a Woman Whose Documented Past Exposure to Asbestos was From Smoking Asbestos-Containing Filtered Cigarettes: The Comparative Value of Analytical Transmission Electron Microscopic Analysis of Lung and Lymph-Node Tissue
Tissue digestion analysis by analytical transmission electron microscopy (ATEM) identified crocidolite fibers in lungs and thoracic lymph nodes. Combined ATEM data of lung and lymph node tissue clarified the patient's exposure to asbestos and particularly to crocidolite asbestos and thus to the presence of an entity recognized as the causal agent for mesothelioma.
July 25th, 2006. Molecular profiling of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma identifies the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway as a therapeutic target in poor prognosis tumors
The mechanism of this synergistic response, which was not detected in cells of epithelial tumor origin, was apoptosis. Together, our results identify the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway as a biomarker of poor prognosis biphasic peritoneal mesothelioma tumors and suggest that proteasome inhibitors could increase the effectiveness of cytotoxic chemotherapy in this subset of patients.

July 24th, 2006. Megakaryocyte Potentiation Factor Cleaved from Mesothelin Precursor Is a Useful Tumor Marker in the Serum of Patients with Mesothelioma
Conclusions: Using new mAbs to MPF, we showed that MPF is secreted by several mesothelioma cell lines and is frequently elevated in the blood of patients with mesothelioma. Measurement of MPF may be useful in following the response of mesothelioma to treatment.
July 24th, 2006. Multilocular peritoneal inclusion cyst - a case report
We report a case of a 26-year old female who underwent Caesarean section during which cysts which were multiloculated, thin-walled and filled with serous fluid, were incidentally discovered. Its histopathologic examination established the diagnosis.
July 22nd, 2006. The Diagnosis of Malignancy in Effusion Cytology: A Pattern Recognition Approach
In addition, the role of ancillary studies in challenging cases and the importance of integrating clinical findings are stressed. An algorithmic approach to the workup of serous effusions as well as pitfalls for false-positive diagnosis are discussed.
July 21st, 2006. Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH): Prevention and detection of asbestos-related diseases, 1987-2005
Conclusions: The success of the primary goal of the Program, a reduction in asbestos-related morbidity, will not be fully realized for many decades.
July 20th, 2006. Perineural Spread of Malignant Mesothelioma Resulting in an Intradural Spinal Cord Mass: Case Report
Perineural spread of malignant mesothelioma resulting in spinal cord compression is an unusual clinical presentation. Intimate involvement of the spinal cord may prohibit aggressive tumor resection.
July 20th, 2006. Involvement of IL-10 and Bcl-2 in resistance against an asbestos-induced apoptosis of T cells
This speculation was partially confirmed by the detection of elevated bcl-2 expression levels in CD4[Formula: see text] peripheral blood T cells from patients with MM compared with those from patients with ASB or healthy donors. Further studies will be required to verify the role of T cells with enhanced bcl-2 expression in tumor progression induced by asbestos exposure.
July 20th, 2006. The high post-test probability of a cytological examination renders further investigations to establish a diagnosis of epithelial malignant pleural mesothelioma redundant.
We concluded that the high post-test probability of a combined morphological and ICH diagnosis of MPM warrants to cease further diagnostic procedures in these patients. Electron microscopy did not add to accuracy of diagnosis.
July 20th, 2006. Plasma and cerebrospinal fluid pharmacokinetics of pemetrexed after intravenous administration in non-human primates
Conclusion: The CSF penetration of pemetrexed was less than 2% (range 0.33–1.58%), suggesting that it should be used in conjunction with other CNS preventive strategies when used in the treatment of malignancies with a predilection for CNS or leptomeningeal metastases.
July 19th, 2006. Pathology of the pleura
Nevertheless, they represent two separate organs of different embryonic derivation and with different yet often symbiotic functions. In this article, the authors explore the pathologic manifestations of the many conditions that primarily or secondarily affect the pleura.
July 19th, 2006. Imaging of pleural disease
The conditions covered include benign and malignant pleural thickening, pleural effusions, empyema and pneumothoraces. The relative merits of CT, MRI and PET in the assessment of these conditions and the role of image-guided intervention are discussed.

July 19th, 2006. Mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis: A rare malignancy mimicking more common inguino-scrotal masses
In the latter area they are commonly confused with much commoner benign conditions. We present three cases of mesotheliomas in the tunica vaginalis testis.
July 19th, 2006. Radiotherapy for malignant pleural mesothelioma
Conclusions: As radiotherapy has never been compared to chemotherapy or surgery or to best supportive care (as part of combination therapy) in a prospective, randomised trial, no data exist supporting one or the other treatment as a better option for patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma. There is a need for multicentre controlled randomised trials assessing the role of radiotherapy in the radical treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma. The studies should be limited to patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma, classified by stage, cytology and type of radiotherapy. The type of radiotherapy should be defined in advance and variables of radiotherapy dose definition and delivery should be carefully controlled.
July 18th, 2006. Human cancer from environmental pollutants: The epidemiological evidence
An increased risk of bladder might be due to water chlorination by-products. The available evidence on cancer risk following exposure to other environmental pollutants, including, pesticides, dioxins and electro-magnetic fields, is inconclusive.
July 18th, 2006. Mesothelioma in patients with nonoccupational asbestos exposure: an evidence-based approach to causation assessment
There is no evidence or only anecdotal evidence to support a causal association between MM and NOAE in individuals who cannot be classified into any of the 4 classes. Future studies are needed to provide more comprehensive data regarding the association between MM and NOAE.
July 13th, 2006. A case of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma successfully treated with Carboplatin and Paclitaxel
However, we successfully treated malignant peritoneal mesothelioma with CBDCA and PTX combined chemotherapy. Our case suggests that we could improve the prognosis of malignant mesothelioma by aggressive chemotherapy.
