Journal Articles on Mesothelioma: May, 2006

May 9th, 2006. The pattern of lymph node involvement influences outcome after extrapleural pneumonectomy for malignant mesothelioma

Conclusions: The classical anatomic location is not as important as the scatter of nodal involvement. Every effort should be made to obtain biopsy specimens from as many stations as possible before undertaking extrapleural pneumonectomy for malignant mesothelioma.

May 9th, 2006. Prognostic value of pleural fluid pH in malignant epithelial mesothelioma after talc poudrage

Conclusions: Baseline ppH correlates with survival in epithelial mesothelioma patients treated palliatively with pleurodesis by thoracoscopic talc poudrage. This noninvasive test - ppH - should be included when staging patients with malignant mesothelioma. Copyright (c) 2006 S. Karger AG, Basel.

May 5th, 2006. Pleural mesothelioma: imaging contribution

fr Abstract Imaging plays an essential role in management of patients of with pleural mesothelioma. In this article, we discuss the respective roles for ultrasonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positon emission tomography for the diagnosis, staging, and postherapeutic evaluation of pleural mesothelioma.

May 5th, 2006. “Therapeutic” pleural surgery

Median survival for operated mesothelioma is 19 months with a 46% five-year survival for the tumors with the best prognosis. At the present time, radical surgical resection is the basis of local treatment for pleural mesothelioma.

May 5th, 2006. Canine cardiac mesothelioma with granular cell morphology

At 4 months after thoracotomy, pericardectomy, and mass excision, this dog was alive and without clinical evidence of pericardial or abdominal effusions. We describe a granular morphologic variant of cardiac mesothelioma in a dog.

May 2nd, 2006. Pleural cancer mortality and compensated cases of asbestosis in Sardinia Region municipalities (1980-2000)

Conclusions: These results indicate the urgency of the epidemiological surveillance of asbestos related diseases in Sardinia. The active search for incident cases of malignant mesothelioma in the whole Region and the analysis of modalities of asbestos exposure (according to national guidelines) is an indispensable tool for the primary prevention of occupational, environmental and domestic exposures from unknown asbestos sources of contamination.

May 1st, 2006. Bisphosphonates Inhibit the Growth of Mesothelioma Cells In vitro and In vivo

Discussion: In conclusion, risedronate and zoledronate inhibit the mevalonate pathway and induce p38 activation in mesothelioma cells in vitro. The effects on the mevalonate pathway dominate because the net result is growth inhibition. Both bisphosphonates also inhibit mesothelioma tumor growth in vivo and prolong the survival of mesothelioma-bearing mice. These results support further study of bisphosphonates in the management of mesothelioma.

May 1st, 2006. Comparison of patterns of metastasis between malignant pleural mesotheliomas and pulmonary carcinomas

Carcinomas metastasized more frequently into the skeleton, the kidneys and the adrenal glands, while metastases of mesotheliomas were more often found in the peritoneum. As of the moment there is no significant difference in the pattern of metastasis between both tumor groups discernible.

May 1st, 2006. Re-expression of the tumor suppressor NF2/merlin inhibits invasiveness in mesothelioma cells and negatively regulates FAK

In addition, NF2-null MM cells stably overexpressing FAK showed increased invasiveness, which decreased significantly when merlin expression was restored. Collectively, these findings suggest that merlin inactivation is a critical step in MM pathogenesis and is related, at least in part, with upregulation of FAK activity.
