April 30th, 2006. Cross reactivity between many anti-human antibodies for their hamster homologs provide the tools to study the signal transduction pathway activated by asbestos and SV40 in the malignant mesothelioma model

All of the antibodies we tested (HGF, Notch, VEGF, Sp1, p53, PP2A, p-ERK1, p-c-jun, Fra1, Fra2, MMP1, MMP9, NFkappaB p65, IkappaB, GAPDH) cross-reacted with their hamster counterparts. These data indicate that hamster mesothelioma model and more in general hamster experimental model, can be used for functional studies because many mouse, rabbit, and goat monoclonal antibodies prepared against human antigens cross-react with their hamster counterparts.

April 28th, 2006. D2-40 antibody immunoreactivity in developing human brain, brain tumors and cultured neural cells

In addition, on cultured human neural cells, D2-40 immunoreactivity was found in nestin-positive neural stem/progenitor cells and neuronal lineage cells. As D2-40 antibody recognizes cell surface antigen M2A, it might be a candidate cell surface marker for isolation of human neural stem cells/neuronal lineage cells in the fluorescence-activated cell sorting technique.

This is particularly true in peritoneal and testicular mesothelial tumors, in which common embryologic origin with epithelial elements results in overlapping immunohistochemistry and morphology. The particularities of peritoneal and testicular mesothelial proliferations, and the main tumors that may mimic them in these sites, as well as the value and limitations of immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy in their differential diagnosis are the subject of this review.

April 28th, 2006. Pemetrexed, a Novel Antifolate Therapeutic Alternative for Cancer Chemotherapy

Premedication, including administration of steroids and vitamin supplements, has been shown to decrease the frequency and severity of pemetrexed toxicities. Pemetrexed should be used as a standard of care for unresectable MPM and recurrent metastatic NSCLC.

April 28th, 2006. Immunohistochemical distribution of tubulin beta II in human normal and neoplastic tissues

In neoplastic tissues, tubulin beta II immunoreactivity was detected in various nervous system neoplasms and other neoplasms such as pancreatic solid cystic carcinoma, pleomorphic adenoma, Warthin's tumor, nephroblastoma, basal cell carcinoma and malignant mesothelioma. We conclude that our monoclonal antibody, KNY379, may be useful as a marker of nervous system neoplasm, pancreatic solid cystic carcinoma, pleomorphic adenoma, Warthin's tumor, nephroblastoma, basal cell carcinoma and malignant mesothelioma.

April 26th, 2006. Interleukin-6 induces both cell growth and VEGF production in malignant mesotheliomas

We concluded that IL-6-dependent growth does not occur via VEGF induction. These results suggest that treatment with anti-IL-6R antibody may constitute a potential molecular targeting therapy for MMs.

April 25th, 2006. Status of Work-Related Diseases in Wisconsin: Five Occupational Health Indicators

Year 2000 baseline results of these 5 occupational disease indicators show that Wisconsin has lower disease rates than the nation for some of the indicators and higher rates for others. Such surveillance data informs the understanding of environmental and other important risk factors for occupational diseases and injuries.

April 25th, 2006. Infrequent existence of simian virus 40 large T antigen DNA in malignant mesothelioma in Japan

None of the 35 malignant mesothelioma specimens showed immunoreactivity for SV40 large T antigen. SV40 infection does not appear to have a major role in the development of malignant mesothelioma in Japan.

April 25th, 2006. Establishment and characterization of four malignant pleural mesothelioma cell lines from Japanese patients

To characterize the biological differences between Y-MESO-8A and Y-MESO-8D, we carried out cDNA microarray analysis and detected genes that were differentially expressed in these two cell lines. Thus, our new MPM cell lines seem to be useful as new models for studying various aspects of the biology of human MPM as well as materials for the development of future therapies.

April 25th, 2006. Laparoscopic intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemotherapy for palliation of debilitating malignant ascites

Conclusions: This method resulted in benefit for those peritoneal carcinomatosis patients with debilitating malignant ascites who were excluded from cytoreductive surgery. Proficiency in laparoscopic staging procedures and experience in the management of carcinomatosis and intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemotherapy (IPHC) are required for the success of the procedure.

April 25th, 2006. Computed tomography findings in 66 patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma due to environmental exposure to asbestos

8%) were the most common CT findings of MPM. Although none of these findings are pathognomonic for MPM, they may provide valuable clues for the differential diagnosis, at least in patients with a history of asbestos exposure.

April 24th, 2006. Review of Patients with Peritoneal Malignancy Treated with Peritonectomy and Heated Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy

Conclusions: Morbidity is significantly associated with duration of surgery and units of blood transfused. Our findings are consistent with the international experience in patients treated with combined peritonectomy and HIPEC.

April 23rd, 2006. Epidemiologic studies of polyomaviruses and cancer: previous findings, methodologic challenges and future directions

Overall, the results from these studies were mostly null, although limitations in study design and exposure assessment complicate their interpretation. This chapter includes a review of results from previous epidemiologic studies of polyomavirus infection and human cancer, discussion of the methodologic challenges in study design, and proposed future directions for epidemiologic research.

April 21st, 2006. h-Caldesmon, a Useful Positive Marker in the Diagnosis of Pleural Malignant Mesothelioma, Epithelioid Type

All mesothelioma cases were found to be negative for the other muscle markers examined. We conclude that h-caldesmon is a highly sensitive and specific marker and suggest its inclusion in the immunohistochemical panel for the differential diagnosis of epithelioid mesothelioma versus lung adenocarcinoma.

April 21st, 2006. Monitoring of Lung Motion in Patients With Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma Using Two-Dimensional and Three-Dimensional Dynamic Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Comparison With Spirometry

Conclusions: dMRI is capable of monitoring changes in lung motion and volumetry in patients with MPM not detected by global spirometry. Thus, dMRI is proposed for use as a further measure of therapy response.

April 21st, 2006. Suppression of pro-metastasis phenotypes expression in malignant pleural mesothelioma by the PI3K inhibitor LY294002 or the MEK inhibitor UO126

Conclusion: The selective MEK or PI3K kinase inhibitors are equally effective in down-regulating the expression of pro-metastasis phenotypes, suggesting that MEK or PI3K are appropriate targets for the development of molecular therapeutics for malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Peritoneal mesothelioma can mimic other types of gynecologic malignancies. Careful clinical and pathologic evaluation is essential for an accurate diagnosis and treatment.

April 19th, 2006. Mortality from malignant neoplasms among workers of an asbestos processing plant in Poland: results of prolonged observation

Conclusions: The prolonged cohort tracing showed an increased risk of asbestos-related cancers. It concerned mainly workers hired by the plant between 1945-1955, when the working condition were most strenuous.
