Journal Articles on Mesothelioma: September, 2005

September 20th, 2005. Evaluation of Semiautomated Measurements of Mesothelioma Tumor Thickness on CT Scans

Conclusion: We have developed semiautomated methods to measure mesothelioma tumor thickness. The potential of these methods has been demonstrated through an observer study. We expect these methods to become important tools for the efficient quantification of tumor extent. Key Words: Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD); malignant pleural mesothelioma; tumor measurement; computed tomography; image processing

September 16th, 2005. Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma: Evaluation with CT, MR Imaging, and PET

PET can provide both anatomic and metabolic information, especially in cases of extrathoracic and mediastinal nodal metastasis. Each imaging modality has its advantages and limitations, but their combined use is crucial in determining the most appropriate treatment options for patients with MPM.

September 8th, 2005. Human and mouse mesotheliomas exhibit elevated AKT/PKB activity, which can be targeted pharmacologically to inhibit tumor cell growth

Collectively, these data indicate that MMs frequently express elevated AKT activity, which may be targeted pharmacologically to enhance chemotherapeutic efficacy. These findings also suggest that mouse models of MM may be useful for future preclinical studies of pharmaceuticals targeting the PI3K/AKT pathway.

September 1st, 2005. Parasternal lymph node metastasis of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma: report of a case

A chest computed tomographic scan done the following year showed a parasternal nodule, and thoracoscopically obtained biopsied material was positive for calretinin. These findings led to a pathological diagnosis of metastasis to the parasternal lymph node from peritoneal mesothelioma.

September 1st, 2005. A Median Sternotomy Approach to Right Extrapleural Pneumonectomy for Mesothelioma

There were no postoperative deaths in this group. At median follow-up of 8 months, we have not encountered tumor progression in the scars.

September 1st, 2005. Incidental localized (solitary) mediastinal malignant mesothelioma

At surgery the tumour could be dissected easily free from the pericardium and great vessels and it was removed totally. Histopathological examination of the tumour revealed a malignant epitheloid mesothelioma.

September 1st, 2005. Mutational analysis of 9 different tumour-associated genes in human malignant mesothelioma cell lines

Mutation of the Chk1 gene implies a novel disruption mechanism of the p53 pathway in HMM, without affecting p53 itself. According to our knowledge, this is the first mutation screening of Chk1, Chk2, Apaf1 and Rb1 in human malignant mesothelioma.

September 1st, 2005. Mesothelioma: treatment and survival of a patient population and review of the literature

Conclusion: Malignant mesothelioma of the pleura and intraperitoneum is a slow-growing disease which is indicated by the long survival, despite the failure of chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery.
