June 28th, 2008. Soluble Mesothelin Related Protein (SMRP) in an Asbestos Exposed Population

Conclusions: This is the first large scale prospective study of SMRP for screening for malignancy in asbestos-exposed individuals. A high false positive rate was observed. SMRP seems unlikely to prove useful in screening for MM.

June 28th, 2008. Mesothelioma and Asbestos-Related Pleural Diseases

We summarized the most relevant data for the diagnosis and the management of benign asbestos pleural effusions, pleural plaques, diffuse pleural thickening and rounded atelectasis. Special attention is dedicated to malignant pleural mesothelioma, given the challenging issues of this disease, the recent advances in its management and the dynamism of research in this area.

June 27th, 2008. The tyrosine kinase inhibitor cediranib for non-small cell lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies

The NSCLC trials include patients with squamous cell histologic features and treated brain metastases, populations for which bevacizumab is currently not indicated. These trials will determine whether cediranib will join the growing armamentarium of therapeutic options for thoracic malignancies and broaden the number of patients with NSCLC who could potentially benefit from antiangiogenic therapy.

June 27th, 2008. Paget disease of the humerus mimicking metastatic disease in a patient with metastatic malignant mesothelioma on whole body F-18 FDG PET/CT

The corresponding CT scan findings of cortical thickening and a "Swiss cheese" appearance were most consistent with Paget disease. The intense FDG uptake in an osseous lesion on FDG-PET in our case reminds us of the variable nature of FDG uptake in Paget disease, the possibility of false-positive findings on FDG-PET in patients with cancer, and the usefulness of the fusion techniques in the evaluation of skeletal lesions, with the potential for discriminating between benign Paget disease and other pathologic bone findings.

June 27th, 2008. Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma With Osseous Metastases and Pathologic Fracture of Femoral Neck

Hematogenous or lymphatic metastasis is not uncommon; however, metastasis to bone has rarely been well documented. This is a case report of malignant pleural mesothelioma metastatic to the femur with a pathologic fracture of femoral neck.

June 26th, 2008. Coalescent pleural malignant mesothelioma and adenocarcinoma of the lung, involving only minor asbestos exposure

The former was positive for adenocarcinoma markers such as CEA, Ber-EP4, PE-10, thyroid transcription factor-1 and Napsin A, and negative for mesothelial markers including calretinin, D2-40, WT-1 and HBME, while the latter was the opposite, resulting in a diagnosis of coalescing malignant mesothelioma and adenocarcinoma. The panel of antibodies used for immunohistochemistry was useful to distinguish the two different components in the one tumor.

June 26th, 2008. Piroxicam and intracavitary platinum-based chemotherapy for the treatment of advanced mesothelioma in pets: preliminary observations

The therapy was able to arrest the effusion in all patients for variable remission times: one dog is still in remission after 3 years, one dog died of progressive disease after 8 months and one cat died due to progressive neoplastic growth after six months, when the patient developed a mesothelial cuirass. The combination showed remarkable efficacy at controlling the malignant effusion secondary to MM in our patients and warrants further investigations.

June 26th, 2008. Induction of apoptosis by intrapleural perfusion hyperthermo-chemotherapy for malignant pleural mesothelioma

Conclusion: In patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma, intrapleural perfusion hyperthermo-chemotherapy induced potent apoptosis of tumor cells, increasing immediately postperfusion and peaking at 24 h.

June 25th, 2008. Asbestos Fibre Concentrations in the Lungs of Brake Workers: Another Look

Conclusions: Re-analysis of published data does not support the interpretation that, in automotive brake repair workers with malignant mesothelioma, asbestos content is within the normal range. The alternative interpretation that brake mechanics have a greater than background burden of asbestos fibres, attributable to occupational exposure to dusts from friction products manufactured from Canadian chrysotile, appears more credible. This asbestos burden might be associated with an increased risk of asbestos-associated cancers.

June 24th, 2008. Immunophenotyping of serous carcinoma of the female genital tract

D2-40 and cytokeratin 5/6 are expressed in a considerable proportion of serous carcinomas and should be used cautiously in a 'mesothelioma panel' in situations where serous carcinoma is in the differential diagnosis. HER2/neu was exclusively overexpressed in serous carcinomas of endometrial origin.

June 24th, 2008. Phosphorylation and localization of protein-zero related (PZR) in cultured endothelial cells

To see if tyrosine kinases other than Src are also capable of phosphorylating PZR, the authors cotransfected HEK293 cells with PZR and one of several tyrosine kinases and found that c-Src, c-Fyn, c-Lyn, Csk, and c-Abl, but not c-Fes, phosphorylated PZR and increased PZR/SHP-2 interaction. These results suggest that PZR is a cell adhesion protein that may be involved in SHP-2-dependent signaling at interendothelial cell contacts.

June 24th, 2008. Separation and Characterization of Respirable Amphibole Fibers from Libby, Montana

Such harvesting of respirable fractions will allow toxicological studies to be conducted within a controlled laboratory setting, utilizing fiber sizes that may more accurately simulate historical exposure of Libby residents' lungs. Importantly, this work describes a method that allows the use of material enriched in more uniform respirable material than raw Libby 6-mix, making comparisons with other known fiber preparations more valid on a mass basis.

June 24th, 2008. Select mortality and cancer incidence among residents in various U.S. communities that received asbestos-contaminated vermiculite ore from Libby, Montana

No statistically significant excesses of asbestosis mortality similar to those in Libby were noted; however, 11 sites (plus a state with 6 pooled sites that were counted as 1 site) had excess rates of mesothelioma and cancer of the peritoneum, retroperitoneum, and pleura. Further investigation should be conducted at these sites with excess rates of mesothelioma and cancer of the peritoneum, retroperitoneum, and pleura by participating state health departments to determine whether exposure to Libby vermiculite might have been a contributing factor.

June 24th, 2008. Measles virus induces oncolysis of mesothelioma cells and allows dendritic cells to cross-prime tumor-specific CD8 response

Priming of autologous T cells by DCs loaded with MV-infected MPM cells led to a significant proliferation of tumor-specific CD8 T cells. Altogether, these data strongly support the potential of oncolytic MV as an efficient therapeutic agent for mesothelioma cancer.

June 24th, 2008. Schedule-Dependent Synergistic Effect of Pemetrexed Combined with Gemcitabine against Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma and Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cell Lines

Conclusion: Sequential administration of MTA and GEM is active, and the schedule of MTA followed by GEM is recommended for treating MPM.

June 24th, 2008. Asbestos Burden Predicts Survival in Pleural Mesothelioma

Conclusion: Our data suggest that patient survival is associated with asbestos fiber burden in MPM and is perhaps modified by susceptibility.

June 24th, 2008. Mesothelioma: a still current occupational cancer

In certain circumstances compensation can be obtained at the Occupational Diseases Found. The renewed interest with regard to this tumour is supported by the improvement of mesothelioma management, the new imaging techniques, the new treatments and the broad diffusion of information related to the risk of developing this tumour following asbestos inhalation.

June 24th, 2008. Multimodal Therapy for Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma Including Extrapleural Pneumonectomy

During the follow-up duration of 23 months, 3 patients (18 %) developed distant metastasis and one (6 %) a mediastinal local recurrence. Multimodal therapy of malignant pleural mesothelioma including extrapleural pneumonectomy should only be performed in specialised centres for thoracic surgery where uncomplicated interdisciplinary communication is the rule and which provide the required expertise in patient selection, operative technique and postoperative care.

June 24th, 2008. Chemotherapy of malignant pleural mesothelioma: have we made any progress?

Besides first-line therapy, there are also data to support the efficacy of chemotherapy in pretreated patients. In spite of the various results of preclinical trials which support the prognostic significance of certain targeted structures of intra- and intercellular signal transduction, no relevant efficacy could be shown for targeted therapies in mesothelioma up to now.

June 17th, 2008. Benign multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma in a cesarean-section scar presenting as a fungating mass

This unusual presentation may point to a traumatic or inflammatory etiology, although seeding of the wound during the previous surgeries is a more likely postulate. A pertinent review of the literature on benign multicystic mesothelioma is also presented.
